There’s a word that sends shivers down some spines. No, it has nothing to do with monsters, ghosts, or other malevolent spirits—well, at least not the kind of spirits that populate horror movies… “September”. If your heart’s just skipped a beat, you’re very likely to be a parent. Calendars filled to the brim. Shopping lists stretching to infinity. An endless procession of uniforms, books, lunch boxes, emails, paperwork, bills…
If you’re feeling overwhelmed this September, you’re definitely not alone. And you’re not helpless either. Read on to find out why your morning routine may hold the key to getting some of this autumnal chaos under control—and why quality coffee beans and electric milk frothers make for a worthy addition to that back-to-school shopping list of yours.
The Most Stressful Month of the Year?
While January marks the official start to the new year, it’s September that feels like a fresh start to many. Schedules change, demands rise, and somehow you’re always caught unawares. Is it any wonder that the first month of autumn is commonly known as “Stresstember”? According to Google’s Misery Index (yes, that’s a thing!), September is marked by one of the year’s largest spikes in stress levels. So, what is it that stresses us out? And why are parents so susceptible?
- Logistics. It’s not like summer was easy, what with all the camps, trips, and having to take your youngest to work with you on Tuesdays… September’s a whole different ballgame though. There are new routines to adjust to, timetables to memorise, after-school activities to pick, forms to sign, and payments to make. Sounds like a full-time job, doesn’t it? And you’re not necessarily qualified!
- Finances. Uniforms, textbooks, notebooks, fees… It all adds up quickly. Plus, that new position of the household’s logistics coordinator you’ve just been forced into isn’t something you’re getting paid for either.
- Feelings. It’s both you and the kids: you’re tense, tired, and irritable. To make it even worse, those tensions tend to feed off each other: an after-school meltdown pushes you over the edge, and the kids are no better after watching you stress over one thing or another for entire days straight. By mid-September, you’re close to breaking point. You may want to sit down and ask yourself: “What can I do about it?”
Smoother Mornings for Smoother September
First off, don’t worry: we’re not making any drastic changes. In fact, drastic changes are the last thing you need more of right now: aren’t there enough of those in your daily life already? Instead, what we’re going to focus on is small, comforting adjustments—little resets amidst the early alarms and school runs.
It’s not by accident that alarms have found their way into this conversation. The key to a smoother September may indeed lie in your morning routine. Sure, there are afternoon, dinner and bedtime routines as well, but it’s the morning that determines how the rest of the day goes. The good news is that we’re not even going to ask you to wake up earlier! What we suggest is three simple fixes: consistency, simplicity, and self-care.

Keep it consistent.
When it comes to getting the morning chaos under control, consistency is key. Try and stick to a schedule: you up at 06:30, kids up at 07:00, out the door by 07:30. It’s unlikely to go off without a hitch, sure, but you can prevent some mishaps by preparing in advance. Make sure that the bags are packed, the uniform’s ready, and the lunches are in their boxes the night before. Keeping everything in the same place is a great little hack too: the kids know where their bags are, you know the exact location of the keys, so there’s no panicked last-minute rush-around.
Stick to the basics.
It’s easier to stay consistent when you keep it simple. No need for an elaborate breakfast, a curated school outfit, or a morning pep talk worthy of an NBA locker room. Avoid spreading yourself too thin: the truth is, a bowl of cereal, an unironed (yet clean!) shirt, and a quick ‘have fun at school’ is more than enough most days.
Upgrade your morning setup.
Before you can sit down and breathe, you need a hassle-free way to make that first drink count. Investing in a reliable espresso machine (or upgrading your old espresso coffee machine) turns a hectic morning rush into a effortless, barista-quality ritual at the press of a button. When you don’t have time to wait in a coffee shop queue before the school run, having a proper home setup saves both your time and your sanity.
Put yourself first.
To take care of others, you must take care of yourself first. It’s corny, but it’s true. This is where your morning coffee can proudly take centre stage: instead of taking chaotic sips in between running around the kitchen, why not devote 15 minutes to a quiet cuppa before waking the children up? Be intentional in slowing down. Grind coffee beans freshly. Browse through milk frothers for a creamier morning treat. Sit down to sip. You’ll be surprised by what a huge difference a little ritual like this can make. Plus, that milk frother may come in handy if the kids get up grumpy again: what about a cheeky promise of an afternoon cocoa as an award for good behaviour?
Not Perfect, but Good Enough
For us parents, September’s a hard month to thrive in. We can survive it though, and at times, that’s good enough. So, let’s arm ourselves with some patience, dedication, and maybe a few extra bags of coffee too: after all, once September’s done with, it’s all uphill from there!
