For families, travel experiences can be a great way to make lasting memories. Family vacations can be some of the best childhood memories. Children might remember the thrill of seeing snow for the first time, discovering a new food, visiting a new city, or having fun after an unexpected travel blunder, years after the suitcases have been unpacked.

The best vacations are not necessarily the most expensive or complicated ones. Even a simple, well-planned trip can give families the opportunity to experience new things, take a break from their routines, and create stories for years to come.

Prioritise experiences over a crammed schedule

When organising a family vacation, parents may want to cram as many attractions and activities into the itinerary as possible. But with so much to see, both parents and children can be worn out.

Instead, focus on a couple of experiences that will be fun for everyone and allow for some spontaneity. A slow pace gives families time to enjoy and discover their environment.

Examples of activities that could be included are:

  • Visiting an old town or village
  • Taking a family cooking class
  • Hiking through a national park
  • Shopping at the local market
  • Learning a new outdoor experience like ski trips
  • A day at the beach or a day in the country
  • Watching the sunrise/sunset together

Don’t make a perfect itinerary. Rather, make opportunities for real connection.

Adventure creates shared stories

An out-of-the-ordinary experience can be a memorable holiday. Adventure does not have to mean extreme activities. It might be just a family ride to a new place, a family kayaking trip, a family hike, or a new sport.

Skiing is a great example as families can learn and progress together. Beginner lessons and family members of all ages can take lessons while the more advanced members of the family ride the slopes. Everyone can then reunite afterwards to share stories about their day.

If you are travelling in a bigger family or group, group ski holidays may be a great option for you. Group travel offers families the opportunity to share activities, meals, and memorable experiences while enjoying a winter destination together.

Learning something new together can also make for a lasting memory. Remembering the first time your child skis successfully can become a family memory.

How family travel benefits you and your kids

Travelling with the family is so much more than arriving at your destination. It’s about stepping away from routines and giving each member a chance to learn new skills, develop a sense of responsibility, and discover together.

Instilling independence in children. Small tasks like packing, checking things off a list, or helping with the planning of the day can give children greater confidence. Older children also learn about travel safety, responsibilities, or travel rules for young travellers.

Experience food culture. Tasting local specialties helps children develop connections to the place they visit. Sometimes simple foods and snacks are the best memories of the trip. Want more out of the experience? Take a cooking class together!

Making memories through generations. Vacationing with a bigger family gives members from different generations a chance to spend time together. Flexible activities make it possible for everyone to enjoy the vacation.

Learning with examples. Travelling teaches children about culture, history, and traditions in a much better way than studying in school.

Adapting the activities for everyone’s skill level. For vacations such as ski trips, families with children of different skill levels can easily spend time together with no problems.

Learning it together

Travel is the best opportunity to learn something new. History, geography, culture, food, and traditions can be learned just by travelling to a new place.

Families can make learning an experience, not another school lesson. A trip to a historic site, a visit to a museum, or learning about local food can give children a completely different context for learning.

It can be even more rewarding to try something where everyone is a beginner. Families could:

  • Discover how to prepare a local cuisine
  • Explore a local craft workshop
  • Learn simple phrases in another language
  • Learn a new outdoor activity, like skiing
  • Visit a cultural or historical site

Small moments mean the most

Not all memories are created equal, and it doesn’t have to be expensive. It’s the small moments that sometimes make for a story that is told over and over by families.

These might include:

  • Being caught in an unexpected shower of rain
  • Playing games together at the hotel
  • Having ice cream after sightseeing
  • The first time snow falls
  • Eating at a local small restaurant
  • Joking about a travel mishap

Some of these moments at the time might seem insignificant. But years later they can be the things that everyone remembers best.

Create a lasting memory for the whole family

Whether you are going for an adventurous winter break, a cultural city vacation or just a simple countryside retreat, the best travel experiences are those where families share great moments together.

The destination may eventually be forgotten, but the stories of how it became the adventure of a family will last a lifetime. The memories of the first ski run, favourite meals, unexpected adventures and laughter will go down in the family history.

That is the beauty of travelling: it does not just take families to new places, it gives them experiences that they can take home to enjoy forever.
