When children are first learning to read, CVC words are one of the first shapes of word that they can learn to handle. Today we have a set of free printable CVC word puzzles that are an easy way to practice putting together some of these words, in a fun way.
CVC stands for consonant, vowel, consonant and so it includes all of those simple words we naturally work on with our kids like cat and dog.

These puzzles are super easy to play with, and we have eight different simple words included in this free printable CVC word pack.
These printable CVC word puzzles can be used with children around the ages of 2-5 years old. For younger toddlers, they are a fun introduction to letters while focusing on the pictures too as easy three piece puzzles.
For older preschoolers, and children around 5 years old you may want to focus more on the letter sounds and blending the words.
How to Use these CVC Puzzles
Print out both pages and then cut out the pieces. Mix them up and work with your child to build the words.
These puzzles are self correcting, with a large picture on each one so your child is sure to get the letters in the correct order to spell out the word.

Each puzzle has a different colored background so if you have them all mixed together it’s easy to see which pieces go together.
For younger children, give just three pieces at a time, to focus on each word individually. Once your child is confident with the activity you can give more words mixed together and let them sort and build all of the words.
To use and re-use these puzzles you can cut out the pieces and then laminate, to make them more durable for long term use. You can also glue them down onto cardboard to make them a little chunkier for little hands.
CVC Words
Each puzzle in the set has a nice big picture, along with the corresponding CVC word.
What are CVC words?
As we mentioned, CVC stands for consonant, vowel, consonant. This is an easy way to represent the shape of the word.
Naturally CVC words are the easiest when children are learning to blend phonics sounds and develop their first reading skills, as the words are simple and short.
Practice Blending
Have the children make each letter sound out loud, and then practice blending them together.
It really helps if they can hear an adult modelling this process, and it can take plenty of repetition for a child to become confident with blending.
