Halloween is a time of sweets and candy, but if you’re looking for a healthier option, kids are sure to love these simple orange jack o lantern fruit cups.
This Halloween, we’ve come up with fun and creative fruit and veg ideas to enjoy throughout the spooky season. My kids and I made these orange jack o lantern fruit cups together in about half an hour, and it was a simple way to get them excited about eating a whole pile of fruit!
Supplies or Ingredients for your Jack o Lantern Orange Halloween treats
To make your own orange Jack o Lantern fruit cups you will need:
- Large oranges (1 per person)
- A selection of small fruit – berries work really well. We used blackberries, blueberries and grapes (both green and purple)
- A sharp knife
How to make Jack o Lantern Fruit Cups
First, slice the top off each of the oranges.
Then carve your Jack o Lantern faces onto the side of each one. We just carved simple triangle eyes with a smiley Jack o lantern mouth. Cut the shapes into the orange skin with a sharp knife, and then carefully push out that section of orange skin to leave a hole behind.
When you’re done carving, scoop out the insides. We used a knife to cut all the way around the edge to loosen the flesh of the orange first, and then scooped out with a spoon into a bowl. You can use the insides for a fruit salad, so as not to waste!
Don’t skip to the scooping stage before you’ve carved your faces – you want the orange to be firm and whole while you’re carving to make things easier.
Once the oranges are empty, you can take your fruit selection and fill up your jack o lantern fruit cups. My kids enjoyed filling their own oranges, and this is a really easy bit that even toddlers could have fun doing.
The fruit that we chose have lots of Halloween colours like black, green and purple to give the Jack o Lanterns a spooky look – while still being cute and not too scary for the little ones.
Once you’ve filled them up to the top, they’re ready to eat! Or you could make lots and keep them aside for a Halloween party.
Another super simple healthy Halloween party food idea is to take smaller oranges or clementines and draw a jack o lantern face onto the skin of each one.
Or you could peel them and add a small stick of celery to turn them into cute little pumpkins, like we did a couple of years ago.
