Halloween
Halloween is the most obvious choice for October preschool themes. You can plan themed lesson activities like making paper jack-o’-lanterns, decorating your dramatic play area as a pumpkin patch or haunted house, or setting up a Halloween sensory bin with potions, or rice, plastic spiders, and mini pumpkins.
Sing some fun halloween songs like five little pumpkins, and get the kids moving, or use our Halloween sentence writing worksheets or Halloween dot to dot.
Costumes
A costume theme is perfect for encouraging creativity. Let children design their own paper masks or dress up in the dramatic play corner as superheroes, community helpers, or animals.
This theme is wonderful for pretend play and helps build confidence and social skills.
Spiders
Spiders make a fun learning theme for October. Try making egg carton spiders, counting spiders for a simple math activity, creating spiderweb art using glue and salt for a fine motor challenge, or reading books like The Very Busy Spider.
Bats
A bat theme ties in nicely with Halloween. You can do a science-based lesson about nocturnal animals or set up a “bat cave” dramatic play area.
Singing bat songs or making a hanging bat craft also supports fine motor skills. You might want to learn a handful of these bat jokes to throw in to amuse the kids, too!
Owls
Owls are another great October preschool theme. Create owl crafts with paper plates, use feathers for sensory bins, or talk about how owls help on the farm by keeping pests away.
Monsters
Monsters give children a chance to be silly, not scared. Play the roll a monster drawing game, use monster playdough mats for fine motor activities, have a monster dance party during circle time, or read Go Away, Big Green Monster. There are all kinds of fun monster crafts you can do, like yarn monsters, handprint monsters, egg carton monsters…. and so many more.
Ghosts
A ghost theme offers so many preschool activity ideas. You can make ghost finger puppets for dramatic play, use cotton balls to create ghost crafts, or practice counting with little paper ghosts.
Witches
Add a witchy twist to your preschool lesson plans with a pretend potion sensory bin, this witches cauldron craft, potion worksheet, a “witch’s kitchen” in the dramatic play corner, plenty of witch crafts or the classic “Five Little Pumpkins” rhyme at circle time.
Candy
Candy themes work well for math activities. Try some candy construction, sort candy by color, count candy corn for number recognition, or make candy-themed crafts. It’s a great way to work in patterns and fine motor practice.
You could even have the kids make and decorate their own candy apple.
Skeletons
Skeleton themes are excellent for teaching about the human body. Try Q-tip skeleton crafts to strengthen fine motor skills or use a felt board skeleton puzzle for hands-on learning.
Read skeleton books, include some skeleton coloring pages or make your own skeleton with our printable template.
Gourds
Pumpkins, squash, and other gourds are perfect for sensory bins and science lessons. Explore the different textures, sizes, and weights, or visit a real pumpkin patch to extend the learning.
You could try this pumpkin patch matching game, make some pumpkin crafts, or play this roll a pumpkin game.
Black Cats
A black cat theme can be paired with Halloween or taught on its own. Read cat-themed books, create black cat crafts, or practice pre-writing skills by tracing cat shapes.
Shadows
October is a good time to explore shadows as the days grow shorter. Teach shadow science experiments, trace outdoor shadows with chalk, or include shadow puppets in dramatic play.
Pirates
Pirates make for an adventurous preschool theme. Hide “treasures” in a sensory bin, create a pirate ship in dramatic play, or make treasure maps to practice following directions.
Astronauts
Astronauts might not be spooky, but space themes are always a hit. Learn about planets, do a space-themed craft, paint outer space, or make your own rocket ship with recycled materials.
