Materials

  • White coffee filters
  • Watercolors
  • Sparkly clothespins
  • Sparkly pipe cleaners

Tools

  • Scissors
  • Paintbrushes

Instructions

  1. Begin by gathering a white coffee filter and watercolor paints. We like to put our coffee filter on paper plates to keep the paint contained.
  2. Start painting the coffee filter with the watercolors.
  3. Paint in any design and with any colors you like, in lots of different ways. Get creative!
  4. Once the coffee filters are fully painted, let the paint dry completely
  5. For the next step, when the paint is dry, cut the coffee filter in half.
  6. Cut a pipe cleaner in half, too
  7. Bring the two halves of the coffee filter together.
  8. Then twist one of the pipe cleaners around the center of the coffee filter ro create the butterfly shape. You will need to make sure the two ends of the pipe cleaner are unwrapped.
  9. Insert the coffee filter into the clasp of a clothespin, with the two ends of the pipe cleaner sticking out from the top. The clothespin will be the butterfly body.
  10. Shape the coffee filter butterfly wings
  11. Finally, curl the ends of the pipe cleaner, with each piece of pipe cleaner going in the opposite direction to form antennae.

Notes

Variation: If you are not able to find coffee filters, you can substitute the watercolor painted coffee filters, for colored tissue paper or crepe paper for a fun tissue paper butterfly craft that's easy for young children.

This version is quicker and with less mess, and is a way to make an easy paper butterfly.
