Today we have a super easy and fun popsicle stick rainbow craft to share.

The classic crafting activity of building a rainbow out of popsicle sticks is fun for kids, but it can also be a very useful learning tool and a great project to help teach toddlers and preschoolers about the colors of the rainbow.

Rainbow crafts are perfect for St. Patrick’s Day, Spring time or just any time of the year where you want some colorful crafty fun. Rainbows also tie in great for a weather theme.

Rainbows and unicorns are some of those craft themes for children which are continuously popular and can’t help but bring a smile to our faces.

This DIY craft project is sure to make your kids’ eyes sparkle and is a perfect activity for a rainy day.

We’ve created a simple and fun craft that will help kids remember the rainbow—and you can combine this activity with our free color mixing printable worksheets to help your little ones learn about colors and mixing primary colors!

This is an easy and inexpensive craft for the whole family. You will need colorful wooden popsicle sticks and a glue stick.

Popsicle Stick Rainbow Craft Supplies

To make this simple rainbow craft you will need the following basic craft supplies

  • Multi colored Popsicle sticks aka craft sticks / lolly sticks – OR plain wooden popsicle sticks and felt tip pens / markers
  • Cotton wool or white cotton balls
  • Glue (a glue stick or white PVA glue is fine)
  • Paper – Blue construction paper, or plain paper and a blue crayon or marker

Method – How to make your popsicle stick rainbow with kids

First, have the kids explore the selection of craft sticks and find the colors that they will need for the rainbow.

This is a chance to talk about the colors in the rainbow, their names and the order that the rainbow colors come in. Once the kids have found the colors that they need, they can start ordering them and place them onto the paper from top to bottom.

The order of colors of rainbow is listed below. Sing rainbow songs with the kids as they work with the colored sticks, as an easy peasy fun way to help them get the rainbow order down in their memories.

  • RED
  • ORANGE
  • YELLOW
  • GREEN
  • BLUE
  • INDIGO
  • VIOLET

For the purpose of this craft we combined indigo and violet into one purple popsicle stick.

Prepare your background, either by using blue construction paper and cutting out a white cloud shape, or color in a plain piece of paper with blue crayon for the sky background like we did.

Next, it’s time for your child to glue down all of the rainbow color popsicle sticks. N placed these at an angled line, to allow space for the cloud drawing on the paper behind.

Glue these down carefully in rainbow order onto the page.

Once every color of craft stick rainbow is added to the paper, add some glue on each end of the rainbow and stick down some fluffy white cotton wool to create a fluffy cloud at each end of the rainbow.

You could also use white Pom poms for this part if you prefer, or white cotton pads.

Variations

These rainbow are super easy to make and you can even add glitter, sprinkles, or sequins for a bit of sparkle.

Without multicolored craft sticks

If you don’t have multi colored popsicle sticks, this can be made with plain wooden crafts sticks. Just add the step of coloring each one yourself.

The easiest way is to have the kids color them in with felt tips or paint. You could also dye them using liquid watercolors or wood dye.

Without Paper Background

Instead of gluing the popsicle sticks down to the paper, an alternative is to rotate them so the colors can be stacked top of each other and the rainbow can be glued to itself.

You can start with red and work down, or indigo and work upwards.
