If you’re looking for an easy and fun Halloween craft idea, these monster toilet paper rolls are perfect. Using simple supplies you probably already have at home, kids can create their own spooky, silly, or even cute tp roll monsters.

This activity is great for toddlers, preschoolers, or daycare groups because it’s quick to set up and doesn’t require any complicated steps.

It’s one of those paper roll crafts that’s just as fun for little hands as it is for older kids, and it’s a wonderful way to work on fine motor skills while making something adorable.

Materials You’ll Need

You don’t need anything fancy to make this monster craft. Just gather up a few empty toilet paper rolls or cardboard tubes, some construction paper, and a mix of fun decorations like pom poms, pipe cleaners, and googly eyes.

Kids can get really creative with their own monster designs, whether they want one with silly hair, scary eyes, or covered in shiny gems. Here’s what you’ll want on hand:

  • Toilet paper rolls or paper towel rolls cut down to size
  • Construction paper
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Pom poms
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick or hot glue (for grown-ups to help secure heavier items)
  • Gemstones and fabric stars
  • Googly eyes (or you can use our printable eyes for crafts if you don’t have googly eyes handy)

My kids always get so excited when we bring out the toilet rolls for a new craft. It’s like they instantly know it’s time to make something silly and fun.

They love creating their own monster characters, and it turns into a whole game where the monsters have names, voices, and even little backstories. It’s amazing how a simple paper roll monster can spark so much imaginative play at home.

Sometimes we use paper towel rolls too, just to make giant monsters. The kids think it’s hilarious to have “big brother” monsters and “baby” monsters made out of different sized cardboard tubes. It really shows how these easy craft ideas can be adapted however you like, and the kids don’t even notice they’re working on their motor skills while cutting, gluing, and sticking everything together.

One of my favourite parts is watching them pile on all the googly eyes* We’ve had roll monsters with three eyes, seven eyes, and even one that looked like a scary eyes toilet paper roll decoration! The kids can’t stop giggling as they decide just how many eyes a monster really needs. It’s these kinds of Halloween craft moments that make October feel so magical at home.

I also love that this paper roll craft is so low pressure. There’s no perfect “recipe rating” for how a monster should turn out – every single one is unique. The only required fields are a bit of glue, some imagination, and the willingness to get a little messy. That’s what makes these monster crafts so easy to love.

You can also use the opportunity to talk about different emotions and feelings as you draw different facial expressions on each monster, as well as talking about simple learning topics like colors, shapes and numbers as you count each monster or count the monster eyes.

Whenever we do this activity, I set out a little monster craft station with all the supplies spread out – construction paper, pom poms, pipe cleaners, gemstones, and of course the trusty glue stick. The kids dive right in, and before long we have a whole lineup of cute roll monsters ready to be part of our Halloween decorations.

*If you don’t have googly eyes at home we also have a solution for that with our free printable eyes for crafts, which you can print, cut out and stick with glue.
