How to keep grounded while traveling

Traveling the world is one of the most rewarding and fascinating experiences you can undertake.

It is a truly beautiful, spiritual adventure that opens up your horizons and helps you understand yourself and others more intimately.

But while travel is amazing, it also comes with its share of challenges, and can be difficult, even stressful at times.

Whether it’s being packed in to a crowded bus, rushing to catch a flight, or just dealing with the many issues that exploring a new destination (in an unfamiliar language), travel can be extremely disruptive to your equilibrium.

But the stress of travel shouldn’t be a barrier to exploring the world and discovering the extraordinary natural wonders around every corner.

We are lucky that travel these days is so easy, and taking advantage of our opportunities is incredibly important.

So what can we do to make sure that travel is something we can do without causing us too much inner tumult?

Luckily there are a few things you can do and strategies you can implement to keep your mind and body balanced whilst you are on the road.

So whether you are sailing off on a British Isles cruise, relaxing at a luxury beach resort, or backpacking your way around South America, here are a few tips and tricks to help you stay grounded while you are on your adventures.

Prepare yourself before you travel

Getting yourself into the right mindset before you head off on your travels is one of the most important parts of staying grounded throughout your trip.

Being fully mentally prepared for whatever might come goes a long way towards staying in a good frame of mind when things don’t go to plan.

You can do plenty of things to get yourself ready, from planning your trip and doing research to practicing yoga, meditating, or journaling your thoughts in the build-up to your departure.

Make time during the trip to check in on yourself

Whilst preparation beforehand is great, continuing to check in on how you are feeling while you are traveling is also a key part of staying grounded.

Making time for yourself on the road is incredibly important, and often surprisingly hard.

It is very easy to feel pressured into doing everything you possibly can, and to feel that if you aren’t visiting every sight or taking part in every activity then you are somehow failing.

Giving yourself the freedom to do nothing, to relax, and to check in on how you are feeling is vital to keeping yourself grounded throughout.

Breathe

It might sound absurdly simple but breathing is a key component of maintaining balance and equilibrium while you are on your travels.

This might just be something incredibly minor – when you feel overloaded with anxiety or stress, stop what you are doing and take a deep, focused, mindful breath.

Or it might involve doing something a little more involved, like box breathing techniques or meditation.

Deep breathing helps to lower your heart rate, get more oxygen into your system, control your blood pressure, and give you a little time just to think. It helps put stressful situations into context, and avoid getting overwhelmed by minor problems.

Keep up your yoga routine

Although maintaining your full yoga practice is probably unachievable when traveling, you can always find time to fit a few poses in wherever you are.

If you can manage to keep your full routine, fantastic, but if not then just sneaking in a pose or two here and there will help keep both mind and body in better shape.

Whether it’s a double pigeon in the back seat of a car, legs up against the wall before bed, or a quick sun salutation by the hotel pool, yoga can be a huge help when it comes to staying grounded abroad.

Stay hydrated

This might sound more of a physical rather than a mental health precaution, but being properly hydrated is hugely important for a balanced mind as well as for your physical health.

Dehydration can lead to dizziness, headaches, and grumpiness, which is not going to be helpful for your mental state.

Get into the habit of carrying a bottle of water with you wherever you go and keep your hydration levels topped up. Your body and your mind will thank you!

Record your adventures

Keeping a journal of your travels and writing about your experiences as you go is one of the best ways to stay mindful of the amazing things you are experiencing, as well as keeping them firmly in your memory for years to come.

Writing about how you are feeling will help you stay grounded, and a travel journal is a beautiful piece of memorabilia that will allow you to enjoy your vacation all over again when you are back at home.
