Books make a brilliant gift for any age group. There’s always the perfect book to whisk you away to an imaginary land, or to make you think, make you laugh, or inspire your creativity. As a child I always enjoyed receiving books at Christmas time, and I normally make sure to include a few books for my kids at any gift giving occasion, whether it’s story books, activity books or non fiction.
We signed up with Britmums to receive a surprise selection of books for age 7-12 and here’s what we received…

- The Racehorse Who Wouldn’t Gallop by Clare Balding
- Diary of a Wimpy Kid Double Down by Jeff Kinney
There’s a good mix here, which will suit my kids and others in the family. I was challenged by Britmums to see who I would give each book to, and I would give the Zoella book to my niece who’s 11 as this seems more suited to her age, and more for girls, while the other two books will suit my older two boys – Z and T.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid will be for Z who is 8 and in year 4. He’s not really read Diary of a Wimpy Kid books before but I have heard so many recommendations for this series, and I know some of his school friends are into these so it should be perfect for his age group for some light humorous reading.
The Racehorse Who Wouldn’t Gallop looks like it will be great for T, who is turning 7 in a few days. He’s interested in reading chapter books now, and enjoys them especially as bed time stories so it looks like this one would be great for him.
All of these books are in the hardback editions which makes them nice to wrap up as a gift too, since they are a bit more substantial in this format.
As a child, I had many beloved books as gifts too – many of which I’ve already shared with the kids like the Narnia series, Harry Potter series and lots of Enid Blyton books. There are more which I’ll look forward to introducing them to in the future too, like The Breadwinner, and the Northern Lights trilogy.
