Today, I’ve got a super adorable activity that’s blooming with fun and learning — the Emotions Flower Face Craft. This hands on nature craft is a beautiful way to help preschoolers learn about emotions.

It’s perfect for a sunny afternoon and is as simple as it is delightful. Imagine your little ones exploring the garden of their feelings with a sprinkle of nature and a dash of creativity!

This crafty adventure isn’t just a way to pass time; it’s a garden bed for growing emotional intelligence in our children.

Kids will get to match vibrant flowers and greens to different facial expressions, making a bouquet of emotions that’s both a feast for the eyes and a lesson in feelings.

From sunny smiles to petal pouts, each flower face is a seedling of conversation about what it means to feel happy, sad, surprised, or even a little thorny.

This is a craft that’s as easy as pie and twice as sweet, so grab your mini-me’s and let’s get started!

What You’ll Need for this Emotions Nature Craft

You can make this simple flower faces emotions craft with just a few very simple supplies that you probably already have at home, and going on a nature hunt to find the flowers and plants to use adds an extra step in the fun before you get started on the craft.

Supplies for the Emotion Flower Face craft and nature activity for kids
  • A blank sheet of paper or cardboard (or a few if you’re feeling ambitious!)
  • A marker or pen
  • A collection of flowers and leaves from your garden or a nature walk (the more, the merrier!)
  • Glue (optional, if you want to make it permanent)
  • Cardboard circle template (optional)
  • A sense of adventure and a sprinkle of imagination!

How To Make Your Emotions Flower Faces

First, Let the kids forage for their floral ‘hair’ and ‘accessories’. Dandelions can be a sunshine-y mane, while delicate lilac blooms might make a pretty pout seem sweeter…. there are so many options.

Once you’ve gathered enough flowers, leaves and nature supplies, lay out your paper on a flat surface. If you’re outdoors, make sure it’s not too breezy, or those petals might take flight!

With your marker, draw several large circles to create a canvas for each emotion.

If you prefer, you can use a circle template to make sure your circles are the same size, and are nice and round and even – but it’s not essential and can be done freehand if that is easier.

Inside each circle, draw a face showcasing a different emotion. Think big, sparkly eyes for surprise, a curved-up smile for happiness, or maybe a downturned mouth for those more gloomy moods.

Discuss each emotion with your kids as they choose their natural materials.

Why might a character with a frown like a bushy brow of leaves? What makes a happy face deserve the brightest flower crown?

If you’re going for a temporary piece, just arrange the flowers and leaves on the faces and snap some photos.

For a more lasting craft, get the glue out and stick each piece down to hold that emotion in place.

Once the faces are complete, have an art show! Let your kiddos explain their creations and what each emotion means to them. It’s a great way to open up about feelings and have a heart-to-heart.
