Are you looking for a fun and educational art project to enjoy with your children? Watercolor crayon resist art is an easy and fun activity that combines creativity with a touch of magic, perfect for little ones and enjoyable for all ages.

This art form involves using a white wax crayon to draw shapes, patterns, and even secret messages or words on a canvas before painting over them with watercolors.

The wax crayon creates a resistant barrier that repels the watercolor paint, leaving the crayon’s design visible and creating a beautiful contrast.

It’s basically like painting and revealing secret messages, or secret pictures. It’s so easy to set up, and a whole lot of fun.

Step-by-Step Guide to Crayon Resist Secret Messages

Materials Needed for the activity

All you need is a few simple things you likely have at home. For the watercolors, you can use any kind. We have done this activity with liquid watercolor and also with the palette type watercolors. Both ways work just fine.

  • A large canvas or thick paper
  • White wax crayons
  • Watercolor paints
  • Paintbrushes
  • A cup of water

Preparation: How to set up

Cover your work area with newspapers or a plastic sheet to prevent stains.

Dress your child in old clothes or an apron.

You can set this up outdoors if it’s good weather, or indoors too – it’s not super messy. I find watercolor creates less mess than regular paint

Creating Your Crayon Resist Art

Step 1: Use the white wax crayon to draw on the canvas. Encourage your child to create various shapes, patterns, or letters. Or you can pre-draw the pictures or letters etc for your child to discover.

Step 2: Once the drawing is complete, set up your watercolor paints and brushes.

Step 3: Dip the brush in water, pick a color, and start painting over the crayon drawings.

Step 4: Watch as the crayon repels the watercolor and your hidden designs come to life!

Ideas for the Watercolor Crayon Resist Activity

  • Hide secret messages or your child’s name in the art.
  • Create a seasonal theme, like snowflakes for winter or leaves for fall.
  • Hide letters or numbers, we even did letters of the Arabic alphabet too
  • We also used this technique on a smaller scale to make these paper plate rainbows
  • Encourage your child to tell a story with their drawings before painting.
