My kids are always busy and excited to try new ideas and crafts. This winter break was a fun opportunity to teach my youngest child how to make a 3D snowflake from a cupcake liner. This winter craft is simple and easy, and a fun way to get creative for kids of all ages.

I love crafts, especially during the cold winter months. If you have a child who enjoys cutting, sticking and coloring then this snowflake craft activity is a great way to pass some time together while spending time indoors this winter.

I am thrilled to share this creative idea for kids: How to make a snowflake craft. This is one of those ideas that can be done in a few minutes, and will give your kids a fun project to do.

Supplies

For this kids winter craft all you will need is a few simple craft supplies. You may already have all of these items around the house, in your playroom or craft cupboards

  • Black paper (blue paper also works well)
  • White cupcake liners (silver cupcake cases also work well)
  • Snowflake stickers, sequins or gems in wintery snowy colours (optional)
  • Scissors
  • Glue (a glue stick is easiest for this activity. You could also use PVA glue and a glue spreader)

How to make this Winter Cupcake Liner Craft Activity

First, to make the cupcake liner snowflakes, you will need to fold each cupcake liner into 8ths. Do this by folding in half, then half again to make quarters, and finally one more half to make eighths.

Then, you just make small snips along the edges. This is the same way that traditional paper snowflakes are cute. You do not need to follow a pattern, just snip away and each snowflake will be slightly different.

cutting cupcake liner snowflake craft

Cutting the snowflakes gives a little more challenge to younger children working on their scissor skills. If cutting through all of the layers proves tricky, they can unfold a little and make a more basic snowflake using the cupcake liner folded into quarters, or cut freestyle.

sticking cupcake liner snowflake craft

Once the first cupcake snowflake is complete, add some glue to the centre and stick it down onto the black or blue paper background.

If you glue only the centre and not the entire snowflake, this will preserve the 3D effect as the edges of the cupcake liner rise upward from the paper.

decorating cupcake liner snowflakes

Add snowflake stickers, gems, adhesive jewels, glitter or sparkly sequins to decorate and create that shiny snowflake winter look.
