How to Use the Summer Rhyming Words Sheet

Our summer rhyming words worksheet focuses on a variety of summery words, encouraging children to discover the joy of rhyming. Here’s how to use it:

  1. Download the PDF: Access the printable for free and print it out. It’s ready to go with no preparation needed.
  2. Read and Identify: Have your child read the words listed in each box. Each word has a pair of jellyfish below it with a word in each one.
  3. Color the Rhymes: Children will color the word that rhymes with the word in the top of each box. For example, for the word “sun,” they should color “run,” which is a full rhyme, rather than “cog,” which does not rhyme.
  4. Repeat: Continue the process with each word set. Words like fan, bite, hen and feet are waiting to be matched with their best rhymes.

The Educational Benefits of Rhyming

Rhyming plays a pivotal role in early reading and phonological awareness. It’s not just about finding words that sound the same; it’s a fun and effective method for teaching children about the sounds within the English language. Here are the core benefits:

  • Phonemic Awareness: Rhyming teaches children to recognize and work with the sounds of spoken language, which is essential for developing reading skills. Kids will learn to listen out for the matching vowel sound, and matching end consonant.
  • Vocabulary Building: Through rhymes, children learn new words and the nuances of the English language, such as slant rhymes and full rhymes.
  • Cognitive Skills: Identifying rhymes is a great exercise for the brain, enhancing memory and concentration.
  • Fine Motor Skill Development: Coloring the correct rhyming word helps refine the fine motor skills necessary for writing.

Extend the Activity

Want to take it a step further? Here are a few ideas for summer rhyming.

  • Rhyming Dictionary: After completing the worksheet, use a rhyming dictionary to find more words that rhyme with the ones on the sheet.
  • Rhyming Cards: Create your own rhyming cards with words from the sheet for a memory match game.
  • Boom Cards: Incorporate digital rhyming activities like Boom Cards for interactive learning.
  • Craft a Rhyme: Encourage your child to create their own summer poem using the rhyming words they’ve learned.

Words that Rhyme with Summer

Think up more rhyming words. Can the kids think of words that rhyme with summer? A few options would be

  • drummer
  • plumber
  • bummer
  • strummer
  • become her
  • dumber

It’s not the easiest word to rhyme… so challenge the kids to have a go.

What about other summer themed words, see if they can make a list and find some rhymes for more summer words like –

  • Sand (band, hand… etc)
  • Beach (teach, reach… etc)
  • Fish (wish, dish, swish… etc)
  • Hot (pot, cot, rot…. etc)

You can keep on going and going with summer rhyming, and even make up your own Summer poem. It is National poetry month right now after all.
