Mother’s Day is the perfect occasion to get a little crafty and show some love, whether it’s a little one making a card at playgroup, preschool, or in the classroom, or you’re at home crafting with family.

Today, I’m excited to share a simple and sweet DIY Mother’s Day card project that’s perfect for kids and adults alike.

This “I Love U (Mom)” card is not only adorable with its paper chickens and sparkling heart, but it’s also easy to personalize.

The coolest thing about this simple card is the way that with one simple cut and fold, a plain circle suddenly transforms into a chick with a wing – this is so easy, you can even make it with toddlers, but the end result is really effective, and gives you a 3D effect so the wing pops off the page.

This card was actually made by one of our friends, Mariana, who is crafty and artistic so she was happy to share this idea with us.

It’s a fantastic activity for children to express their creativity and make a heartfelt gift for Mom—or even Grandma!

Whether you’re putting together this cute card in a group setting or making it during some quiet crafting time at home, it’s sure to bring smiles and a touch of personal flair to your Mother’s Day celebration.

Let’s get into the instructions of how you can create this cute baby chick mother’s day card craft.

Supplies for this homemade Mother’s Day Card

The supplies needed for this simple DIY mother’s day card are wonderfully simple and likely items you already have around the house or can easily find at any craft store.

You’ll need craft or cardstock paper, colored paper, a pencil, a fine line drawing pen, scissors, PVA glue, wooden tile letters for the “I” and “U”, and some glitter to add a bit of sparkle.

You could even mix it up by using patterned card or paper for your chicks.

We also use a cup or any cylindrical object to help draw perfect circles. This project is designed to be straightforward, ensuring that even young crafters can participate with minimal help.

Whether done at home, in the classroom, or during a playgroup, the process is easy to follow, making it an ideal activity for children who want to give something special and handmade to their moms or grandmas.

Active Time: 15 minutes
Difficulty: Easy

Create a heartfelt and handmade "I Love U (Mom)" card this Mother's Day with simple craft supplies. This easy and fun project is perfect for kids and can be done at home, in school, or in a playgroup.

Materials

  • Craft papers/Cardstock papers (We used 210 gsm).
  • Colours paper (We used 75 to 100 gsm)
  • Pencil.
  • Fine line drawing pen.
  • Scissors.
  • PVA Glue.
  • Wooden tile letters ( I and U).
  • Glitter.
  • Cup or any cylindrical object.

Instructions

  1. Step 1:
Use your cup or cylinder to draw 2 circles (one bigger than the other) on your coloured paper (75 – 100 gsm). These can be in any colour you wish.
  2. Step 2:
Cut out the circles and make one cut, in each circle, from the outline to the centre of the circle. This will allow us to do the folded wing.
  3. Step 3:
Draw and cut out the 2 peaks and one crest (for the biggest chicken).
  4. Step 4:
Fold the card paper in half. This will become your card and we will use it in horizontal direction.
  5. Step 5:
Glue the 2 chickens on the card, facing each other, and glue the peaks and crest. You can use a glue stick in this part, if this is more convenient for you.
  6. Step 6:
With the fine line drawing pen, draw the legs and eyes.
  7. Step 7:
On top of the little chicken, draw a heart with the pva glue and add the glitter on top.
  8. Step 8:
Glue the letters I and U to each side of the heart, let it dry.
