Moving Eyes Witch Craft
Make a paper witch with eyes that move! This interactive Halloween craft uses a printable template and a simple sliding paper mechanism for a spooky, silly character kids can bring to life.
There’s plenty for little hands to do, from tracing and cutting the shapes to adding facial details and testing the moving eyes. Younger children can help choose the colors and glue the larger pieces, while an adult handles the trickier cutting, especially the eye openings and cardboard backing.
Materials for Your Moving Eyes Witch
You only need a few basic craft supplies to make your witch. Choose construction paper in the colors you’d like for her face, hair, hat, and other details, plus a piece of white paper for the moving eyes. A piece of clean cardboard from your recycling box works well for the backing.

How to Make a Moving Eyes Witch
Start by printing your template and setting out your paper and supplies. You’ll make the witch first, then add the sliding eyes behind her face. The main thing to remember is to keep the white eye paper free of glue so it can move once everything is assembled.

Instructions
- Step 1: Cut Out the Face and Ears
Print and cut out the template pieces. Trace the witch’s face and two pointed ears onto purple construction paper, then cut them out. Carefully cut out the two round eye openings in the face, asking an adult to help with these smaller inside cuts.
- Step 2: Attach the Ears
Glue one ear behind each side of the witch’s face, with the pointed ends sticking outward. Press the glued areas gently to secure them.
- Step 3: Prepare the Facial Features
Cut out two black eyebrows, a black semicircle for the mouth, a purple triangle for the nose, and a small white tooth. Use your black marker to add little dots to the nose.
- Step 4: Glue the Features onto the Face
Glue the eyebrows above the eye openings, angling them slightly to give your witch a mischievous expression. Attach the black mouth near the bottom of the face and add the white tooth along its top edge. Glue the purple nose between the eyes, with the point facing down toward the mouth.
- Step 5: Cut Out the Hat Pieces
Use the template to cut out the tall, crooked witch’s hat from black construction paper. Cut a curved green hatband and a yellow square buckle, removing the small square from its center. Add a few crease lines to the hat with a light-colored marker or pencil so they show against the black paper.
- Step 6: Decorate the Hat
Glue the green band across the hat just above the brim. Attach the yellow buckle to the middle of the band, leaving the green paper visible through the square opening.
- Step 7: Make the Hair and Backing
Cut out the orange hair piece using the template, including the uneven notches along the bottom. For a sturdier backing, mount the orange paper onto thin cardboard before cutting out the shape.
Cut a small oval opening near the upper center, as shown. This opening will let you reach the moving eye paper from behind. Add a few lines around the edges and ends of the hair for detail.
- Step 8: Draw the Moving Eyes
Cut a rectangle of white construction paper that fits behind the witch’s face and covers both eye openings, with extra room for sliding. Check the eye positions against the face, then draw two black pupils. Add purple circles around the pupils if you’d like to match the pictured witch, leaving a tiny white highlight in each eye.
- Step 9: Position the Eye Paper
Place the white rectangle on top of the orange backing, covering the oval opening with the drawn eyes facing upward. Do not glue it down. This piece needs to stay loose so you can move it later.
- Step 10: Attach the Face over the Eyes
Place the witch’s face over the white rectangle, lining up the pupils with the two eye openings. Glue the face to the orange backing only around the outer areas, keeping all glue away from the eye paper and the space it needs to slide.
The orange hair should show around the sides and below the face.
- Step 11: Check the Opening at the Back
Turn the witch over. You should be able to see the back of the white eye paper through the oval opening in the orange backing. Once the glue has dried, gently move the paper with your fingertip to check that it slides freely between the layers.
- Step 12: Attach the Witch’s Hat
Turn your witch face up again and glue the finished hat across the top of her head. Position the brim just above the eyebrows, covering the top edges of the face and orange hair.
- Step 13: Bring Your Witch to Life!
Your moving eyes witch is ready! Hold her up and use a fingertip through the opening at the back to slide the white eye paper gently from side to side. Watch her glance around, then try giving her a silly voice to go with those mischievous moving eyes!
Have Fun with Your Paper Witch
Once your witch is ready, it’s time to give her a voice! Kids can make her look left and right while she searches for her missing broomstick, checks on a bubbling potion, or spots a black cat sneaking past.
Try making a few witches in different colors and letting children put on a little Halloween show. Changing the position of the eyebrows or the shape of the mouth can make each one look friendly, surprised, or a little bit grumpy.
This craft gives kids a chance to practice cutting, tracing, and placing small pieces, as well as exploring how a simple moving part works. They can see exactly how sliding the hidden paper changes the witch’s expression, which makes the finished craft especially satisfying to play with.
