Wintertime is coming, and it’s not too early to start thinking about how kids can create their own home made Christmas cards or winter pictures for friends and family.

What better way to keep kids entertained on a cold day than with a fun, easy, and cute snowman craft? Kids will love how they can make a snowman out of potato prints!

With this guide, you’ll be able to create a friendly snowman painting with your children in no time. Potato printing is a really fun art activity for toddlers, pre-schoolers and even older children too.

This snowman craft is easy to make and the materials are inexpensive, and easily available around the home making it perfect to pull together last minute.

All you need are a couple of potatoes, some paint, and a few other supplies which we will list below.

Potato Print Snowman Painting Supplies

  • Construction paper – we used blue which is an ideal choice for the background like the cold blue winter sky
  • White paper
  • Glue (pva glue or a glue stick like pritt-stick)
  • White paint – ready mixed paint is great, we normally use these paints for our art projects.
  • Potato and a sharp knife to cut
  • Black marker pen or felt tip.
  • Coloured paper including orange, for the noses and hats

Potato Printing Snowman Picture Method

You can switch up the details to use this craft with your children to create something that is personalized and reflective of each individual!

Here’s a guideline of how to make these adorable potato print snowmen.

Take your blue construction paper and keep it ready for the background of your picture.

Cut a wavy shape from your white paper, this will be the snow at the bottom of your picture, then glue this to the bottom of your page.

Next, you’re ready to start stamping and printing your snowmen.

Cut some shapes into your potato. You can go with a clean round circle, or a little bit wiggly and wavy like the picture below.

Then paint the area with white paint and start stamping onto the page, in three sections for each snowman.

Once the paint has dried, kids will love to get creative with the details. Draw on the arms, snowman’s buttons, snowman’s face with eyes and mouth and glue down an orange triangle snowman nose.

Cut out the shape for the snowman’s top hat and you could also add some fun scarves either by drawing on the scarf with felt tip pen, or cutting from coloured paper just like with the hat.

The finished result is so cute and wintery. These would be lovely for the front of a Christmas card, or display your snowman art in the window of your house to bring a smile to passer’s by in the run up to Christmas.

After all, everyone loves a festive snowman especially hand made by a little child 🙂
