easy paper plate ramadan moon craft for kids

Within Islamic traditions, the crescent moon holds a place of honor. Not just a symbol that gracefully adorns flags and minarets, the crescent is deeply woven into the heart of Ramadan.

It’s the silver sliver in the sky that ushers in the holy month, with communities eagerly awaiting its sighting to begin the period of reflection and fasting.

The moon and star together symbolize faith, guidance, and the turning of time within Islamic culture. For many, crafting this symbol is a tender nod to the lunar marvel that marks the beginning of a time filled with spiritual growth, gratitude, and togetherness.

As you and your little ones cut, glue, and paint, you’re not just making Ramadan decorations; you’re paying homage to a celestial sign that brings millions of people together in a shared celebration of peace and piety.

Materials

  • 2 Paper plates
  • Paint (gold and black or your choice)
  • Scissors
  • Glitter Glue or a Marker pen
  • String (optional)
  • Tape or glue

Tools

  • scissors

Instructions

  1. Grab one paper plate and cut out a crescent shape, using the round outside edge of the paper plate for the edge of your crescent.
  2. With the remaining piece, draw a star and cut it out too.
  3. Take the crescent and the star, and give them a fabulous makeover with some gold paint. Don't be shy; lay it on thick for that extra shine! Allow them to dry completely — patience is key here, little artists! Note: You want to paint the reverse side of the paper plate crescent, so that it will have more of a 3D domed effect when added to the backing later.
  4. Take the second plate and channel your inner Van Gogh with a coat of deep black paint, or use dark blue for the night sky. Flick some white paint onto the black or dark blue background for stars. Once it's painted, let it dry while you ponder over how cool the universe is.
  5. Adding the 'Ramadan' Magic: With your glitter glue or marker pen, write 'Ramadan' across the golden crescent to really bring home the theme.
  6. Assemble the Masterpiece: Once all the pieces are dry, it's time to glue them together. Place the black plate as the backdrop and artfully position your golden crescent and star to create a celestial scene.
  7. Display with Pride: Find the perfect spot in your home or classroom, and hang up your DIY Ramadan decoration. Stand back and admire your handiwork — you've just made something beautiful!

Alternative Version

To add variety, you can mix things up with another version of this craft. In this version, we are going to hang up the paper plate crescents with string. Complete steps 1-3 as above and then get your string and tape.

Using this thin string, you will attach the star to the crescent, so they will be connected without the additonal paper plate backing.

Turn over the paper plate crescent to the unpainted, side and lay string along the paper plate, securing with tape

Now your paper plate crescent and moon can be hung up and displayed as a simple Ramadan decoration.
