Ramadan Lanterns are not just pretty to look at; they’re steeped in tradition and symbolize the light and guidance that comes with this spiritual month. Ramadan lanterns, also known as fanoos, are a symbol of joy and anticipation for the month of Ramadan.

Traditionally, children in countries like Egypt, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia would walk the streets with their fanoos, singing songs and basking in the excitement of the upcoming festivities.

While it’s more common to see these beautiful lanterns in Middle Eastern countries, the trend of crafting and hanging fanoos has caught on globally. It’s a heartwarming blend of art, culture, and history that brings communities together, lighting up not just homes, but also hearts.

So, let’s brighten up our homes and classrooms with some beautiful paper lanterns, shall we?

  2. Trace and Cut: Trace the template onto two different colors of construction paper. You will need four cut outs in total. This is where you can encourage kids to mix and match colors or even add their own designs.
  3. Fold and Stick: Fold the cutouts in half right down the middle, and then use your glue stick to attach the parts. This simple activity not only creates a stunning finished lantern but is also a subtle way to teach kids about symmetry and shapes. Keep attaching the lantern shapes until you have all four pieces connected to create a 3d lantern shape.

Crafting is not just about following steps; it’s a journey of learning and growth. For young children, this is a great project that improves dexterity and patience. And for the slightly older ones, it can be a doorway into understanding different cultures – a perfect addition to lesson plans in social studies or foreign language classes.

Not to forget, this craft is a fantastic resource for occupational therapy. The cutting along lines, folding along fold lines, and the concentration needed to apply glue neatly on the outer edges – all contribute to fine motor skill development.

Encourage your young ones to add a personal touch and customise their own designs. They can draw vertical lines, patterns, or even add squares of colored tissue paper before assembling, and add their own names to the finished lanterns.

You could add some washi tape along the edges for a splash of color and texture. It’s a fun way to introduce different crafts and great ideas to spark that creative flair.

Remember, the goal is to have much fun and enjoy the process of making your own paper lanterns. Don’t stress about perfection; the quirks make it special. And if you’re a teacher, incorporating this into your visual arts curriculum or as a festive activity can be so rewarding.

Don’t forget to grab your free paper lantern template below and get started on this great project. This is cultural crafting at its best, and it’s all for personal use to create memories and smiles.
