Paper Bag Corn Craft

There are so many fun corn craft ideas for fall, from beaded corn and corn craft with beads activities to printing with real corn cobs, but this corn paper craft is especially cute because it doubles as a simple puppet.

Once it has been made, kids can slip their hand inside the paper bag and use their corn character for pretend play, songs, harvest stories, or classroom activities.

It is a fun addition to a learning corner and crafts area during the fall months, particularly if you are talking about farms, vegetables, crops, or where our food comes from.

Supplies for Your Corn Craft

You only need a handful of basic craft supplies to make this easy corn craft. If you already keep construction paper and paper bags in your crafty corner, you probably have most of what you need ready to go.

Materials

  • Paper bag
  • Construction paper
  • Colored pencils
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Googly eyes
  • Printable corn craft template

Yellow construction paper is used for the main ear of corn, while green paper makes the corn husk leaves around the outside.

You can also swap the googly eyes for paper eyes if you are making this corn craft for toddlers and would rather avoid small loose pieces.

How to Make a Paper Bag Corn Craft

Print the corn craft template before you begin and gather all of your supplies. Younger kids may need some help cutting around the template pieces, while older children can cut and assemble most of the craft independently.

Instructions

  1. Start by cutting a rectangle from yellow construction paper so it fits neatly onto the front of the paper bag. Use yellow, brown, or white colored pencils to draw horizontal lines across the paper, then add small curved marks between the lines to give the corn a more textured, kernel-like look.
  2. Cut out the large green corn husk piece from construction paper using the printable template. Add a few simple curved lines and details with a green colored pencil or marker to make the leaves look more natural.
  3. Glue the yellow corn piece onto the front of the paper bag. Position the green husk over the lower section of the corn and glue it in place so the two leaves curve upward around the sides.
  4. Next, cut out the smaller template pieces for the corn’s face and top section. You will need the brown corn silk piece, two eyebrows, and the smiling mouth. Add a few dark lines to the corn silk to give it some extra detail.
  5. Glue the brown corn silk behind the top edge of the yellow corn, then attach the eyebrows and mouth to the front. Finish the face by adding two large googly eyes.
  6. Press all of the pieces down firmly and allow the glue to dry. At this stage, your corn character should be fully assembled on the paper bag and ready to use.
  7. Once everything is dry, your paper bag corn craft is finished. Kids can use it as a simple puppet for fall pretend play, harvest activities, farm themes, or vegetable learning.

Learning About Corn During Fall

This craft can easily become part of a bigger fall learning activity rather than being just an afternoon art project.

Corn is especially fun to explore during harvest season because kids can see how an ear of corn grows inside its corn husk and compare the real vegetable with the paper version they have made.

You could bring in an actual corn cob and let kids look closely at the kernels, count a few rows, feel the husk, and talk about the different parts of the plant.

Kids can also learn that corn can be used to make lots of different foods and products. Depending on their age, you might talk about sweet corn, popcorn, cornmeal, tortillas, cereals, or even how corn is grown and harvested.

That makes this simple corn craft for preschoolers useful for farm themes, vegetable units, food lessons, autumn activities, or harvest studies throughout the school year.
