The winter months can be a challenge in a lot of ways. The short days that lack sunlight are slightly depressing. Commuting during a snowstorm is also nerve wracking and stressful. And being inside a lot is boring.

Add to the fact that your skin usually suffers in the winter and you have a recipe for a long, long season to come. It’s dry and cold so your skin is usually irritated and sensitive which makes it hard to feel comfortable exactly when you need it most.

In this article, I will give you some winter skin care tips to keep you feeling good so you can tackle that season like it was nothing at all.

Take care of your lips

The lips are an interesting part of our body. The skin there is not like any of the skin on the rest of our body so we don’t really know how to take care of them.

And when it is cold and dry chapped lips are very frequent and can be quite painful. When lips get dry and cracked once they pass the chapped stage, it can be really unpleasant and look really bad, too.

You’ll need some good lip balm to take with you to make sure they stay hydrated and plump. Mario Badescu lip balm is a very good one that adds a ton of moisture to your lips to prevent them from cracking. You can even use it at night to make sure that it penetrates really well.

Exfoliate the skin

According to Hair and Skin there is usually a layer of dead skin cells that build up on our skin and makes it feel dull and dry.

This skin then should get some moisturizer that will penetrate deep due to exposing the new layer. With it penetrating deep into the skin, it can stay moist longer and will be less likely to get dry and irritated by the cold winter air.

Don’t overwash

Keep your showers short in the winter and just give yourself a once over with the soap. And that hot shower may feel really nice when it’s cold outside, but it is actually going to make it difficult for you to keep your skin healthy.

The hot water and soap will strip away your skin’s natural oils that help to protect it from the dry air and also keeps it nourished. In the summer this isn’t a problem because it comes back quickly. In the winter, it doesn’t so you end up with very dry and flaky skin if you don’t take shorter showers and leave the scrubbing for later.

Use a moisturizer right away

As soon as you get out of the shower in the winter, make sure to get some good, natural moisturizer all over your skin. While your skin’s pores are open from the shower, it will help absorb all the goodness from the cream deep down so it stays hydrated and healthy.

  1. Thanks for all the information to combat this upcoming winter. Sunscreen in winter is important, especially with the sun reflecting off the beautiful, shiny, bright white snow.
