Holiday ideas for grandparents

There’s certainly no shortage of holiday destinations that are perfect for grandparents. If you’re looking for a vacation spot that’s got plenty to offer to the older generation, and the whole family if they want to enjoy the adventures too, then the following three countries are well worth considering.

India

With its fascinating array of landscapes, people and cultures, India might be the perfect place for your next family vacation. This vast nation is home to everything from snow-capped mountains to sun-soaked beaches, and it boasts some of the world’s most iconic buildings. No holiday to India is complete without a trip to the Taj Mahal. Once described by Rudyard Kipling as the ‘embodiment of all things pure’, this awe-inspiring construction is widely acknowledged to be one of the most beautiful buildings in the world. For the full lowdown on this architectural triumph, you can take a guided tour.

Also popular are the Buddhist Caves of Ajanta. Located just over 60 kilometres south of the city of Jalgaon in western India, these intriguing structures date from the 2nd century BC to the 6th century AD, and they were among the earliest monastic institutions to be built in the country. Despite their age, they feature an array of well-preserved paintings. Do some research online at places like Saga Blog to discover the many great experiences you can have in the region.

Portugal

A little closer to home, Portugal also makes a superb setting for a relaxing sojourn. Complete with its picturesque coastline, charming villages, buzzing cities and sumptuous cuisine, Europe’s most westerly nation is brimming with appealing visitor spots for the whole family. The capital Lisbon is a must-see. Its steep, cobbled streets retain their 18th century feel and they feature a wide selection of shops, eateries, museums and more. While there, make sure you take a ride on the vintage tram 28. For a small fee, it will take you past many of the city’s most interesting sights and neighbourhoods.

The Algarve is another tourist favourite, and it’s easy to see why! With its alluring beaches, this is a great spot for some relaxation, and although much of the area is highly developed, it’s still possible to find quiet pockets if you’re after some peace.

South Africa

If it’s adventure you’re after, perhaps a trip to South Africa would fit the bill. The country now welcomes more than nine million tourists each year, and once you’ve enjoyed a break there, you’ll understand why. Home to everything from deserts to vineyards, it offers unforgettable holiday experiences. For a safari, the Kruger national park is first-rate. Stretching over 19,485 square kilometres, it’s home to a host of iconic species, including lions, elephants, cheetahs, rhino, giraffes, hippos and buffalos.

To experience city life, head to Cape Town. This multicultural metropolis has the impressive Table Mountain as its backdrop, and it offers a range of cultural highlights, including its imaginative street art.

Wherever you choose to go, it pays off to do plenty of research before you set off so that you can make the very most of your time away from home.
