Before we get right into the crafting, let’s hop into some riveting frog facts! Did you know that frogs use their sticky tongues to catch fast-moving prey?

Or that the life cycle of a frog—from a tiny egg to a tadpole to a full-grown amphibian—is one of the most remarkable transformations in the animal kingdom?

These fascinating creatures come in different colors and sizes, with some species boasting incredibly long legs or displaying unique behaviors like Darwin’s frog, which carries tadpoles in its vocal sac!

This craft is not only a great way to teach these fun facts but also helps in developing fine motor skills as kids cut, paint, and assemble their froggy friend.

With just a few simple craft supplies—like a paper plate, green paint, and a pair of scissors—you can create an adorable frog that brings a smile to anyone’s face. It’s a perfect preschool frog craft, but just as much fun for older children who might add their own creative twists.

The addition of googly eyes that really move makes our little green guy come to life, offering younger children a wonderful opportunity to explore their creativity while enhancing their fine motor skills.

Materials

  • Paper plate
  • Green paint and a paintbrush
  • Scissors
  • Color pencils
  • Strip of red paper
  • Black construction paper or white paper and a marker
  • And a free printable template that I’ll provide at the end of this post!

Tools

  • Printer for the template

Instructions

  1. Begin by transforming the half paper plate into the frog's body. Cut the plate into the shape of a frog, by cutting in half with two bumps where the frogs eyes will be
  2. Paint your little frog green and wait for it to dry. This is a great moment to discuss why many frogs are green—perfect for camouflaging themselves in leafy environments!
  3. Next, focus on the frog's eyes. Cut the inner part of the eyes from the top of the paper plate. This will prepare your frog to have those adorable, moving eyes that peek out from its face.
  4. Print the free template provided. It includes the shapes for the frog’s mouth and eyes. Cut out these parts and trace them onto the appropriate colored paper.
  5. Attach the smile to the front of the paper plate and cut a slit at the frog's mouth to put through the tongue.
  6. Assemble the eyes with white paper and smaller black circles, or use a black marker
  7. We will make a long red tongue made from red construction paper. This represents the frog's iconic long, sticky tongue, ready to snatch up any pretend insects that might fly by!
  8. Connect the white paper of the eyes, and the red tongue together
  9. Insert the red tongue through the slit in the mouth of the frog, keeping the eyes at the back
  10. After you insert the frog's tongue through the slit you made in the mouth, you can move the eyes by wiggling the tongue at the front of the frog, allowing your frog to "catch" its prey. This interactive feature will definitely be a hit!
