I love books with an interactive element, it’s a great way to keep children’s interest and learn through practical activities. We were recently sent a dinosaur book from Tobar, with a make your own dinosaur skeleton activity attached. This was a perfect activity for Mr Z (age 6)

dinoskelecollageThe book has lots of factual information about dinosaurs on the inside, along with plenty of colourful pictures and on the front the pack of dinsaur bones is mounted, for you to use to create the skeleton.

dinosaurs bookThe book also contains 7 dinosaur stencils at the back, so there is plenty to keep children entertained.

dinosstenciThe dinosaur skeleton model was the activity that attracted Mr Z’s attention straight away. This activity takes a fair amount of concentration for a 6 year old and has some fiddly bits to it but the instructions are very clear and all the pieces are numbered very specifically (every slot is numbered) so you can’t really go wrong as long as you read and follow the instructions properly.

dinos4Mr Z and I did this together as a quiet activity before bedtime and completed the skeleton easily in the one sitting.

dinos1The pieces are made of cardboard, but they are plenty strong enough to last well when handled with care. I wouldn’t give this activity to my younger boys, as the pieces would be too small for them to attach properly. I would say 5.5-6 is the lower age limit, and that this activity could easily appeal to older boys too.

dinos3Here’s our model half way through, it stands up very well and started to take shape quickly.

dinosmadeMr Z was very pleased with his final model, and it’s displayed on his bedroom shelf. After making the skeleton we looked through the book to compare our model to the different species of dinosaur and see which ones had similar features or different features, and talked about all of the pictures and facts in the book. Using the model really helped to engage Mr Z and focus his attention on the topic.
