Using public transport is helpful, but it’s still not great, and that’s why staying at home and working there has to be a good solution if you have the option.
It’s true that not all businesses allow remote working, and some jobs won’t fit the model – someone working in a restaurant, a physical store, or a hospital, for example, couldn’t do their jobs from home – but if you’re able to take the option of being a remote worker, you’ll be helping the planet by not commuting, so that’s good. Even if that’s not an issue right now, when you need to change things again (or someone else does), you’ll have to dispose of things that are going to cause issues for the planet. Plus, the more people buy these items, the more products have to be made, and that’s bad for the planet, thanks to the manufacturing involved. And if they’re in the shops, people are going to use them. The cycle just goes on and on.
However, if you can use recyclable materials in your home decor and home improvements, that problem starts to be eliminated. Not only will you not be contributing to the manufacture of unsustainable items, but you’ll also make it easier to replace them when they need to be replaced.
The great thing about this plan is that there’s a recycled alternative for almost anything you might need, so even if it takes a little time to find it, you can get there in the end.
