The vibrant blend of red and green hues, accented with watermelon seeds and rind texture, gives this DIY craft a delightful charm that brings a burst of summer fun, whether indoors or out.

Materials

  • A square piece of red paper
  • A square piece of green paper (both squares should be of the same size)
  • A pin
  • A straw or a wooden stick
  • Scissors
  • A small bead
  • Glue
  • Black marker or black paint for watermelon seeds
  • Dark green color (crayon, marker or paint) for texture on the green side

Tools

  • Scissors

Instructions

  1. Prepare the paper: Start with the red and green square papers of the same size. A good size is 8x8 inches, but you can choose any size you prefer. The paper does need to be square, so if you have a piece of A4 paper then cut into a square shape. Do this for both colors of paper
  2. Glue the papers: Take both pieces of square paper and glue the two pieces of paper together (the colored sides facing out). Make sure the edges align neatly, then set it aside to dry.
  3. Fold the paper: Once the glued papers are dry, fold the square diagonally to form a triangle. Unfold and repeat the fold the other way. You should end up with an 'X' crease.
  4. Cut along the folds: Starting at each corner, cut along the fold line towards the center. Stop about half an inch from the center so you still have a small square uncut in the middle.
  5. Add details to the papers: On the red paper, draw small black dots to resemble watermelon seeds.
  6. On the green paper, add some darker green color for texture to mimic the watermelon rind These details should be more along the edges of the sections, as shown.
  7. Create the pinwheel blades: Take every other corner (four in total) and fold it towards the center of the square, where all the fold lines intersect. Repeat for all four blades. This will show off your watermelon theme on both sides of each blade.
  8. Secure the blades: Add a dab of glue to the center of the paper where all the folded corners meet and press down. Allow the glue to dry before continuing.
  9. Pierce the center: Once the glue is dry, take your pin and carefully pierce through the center of the pinwheel where you've glued the corners together.
  10. Attach to the straw or stick: Now push the pin (with the pinwheel on it) into the top of your straw or stick. Be sure it goes straight in, not at an angle.
  11. Add a bead: If your pinwheel isn't spinning freely, try adding a small bead on the pin between the paper pinwheel and the straw. This gives it a bit more room to spin.
  12. Secure the pin: Carefully bend the end of the pin down into the straw or stick so it stays in place but the pinwheel can still spin.
  13. You're ready to play with the watermelon pinwheel with the kids. Take it out in the breeze, or gently blow on the pinwheel or windmill to watch it spin. Now, you have your summer-ready watermelon pinwheel! Enjoy your crafting and remember to supervise children when using sharp objects like scissors and pins.

This craft is suitable for children aged 6 and above with adult supervision, especially for the steps involving sharp objects like scissors and pins.
