We’re all going through an adjustment period. From getting used to having our partners at home all day to homeschooling the kids, not being able to see family and friends and trying to maintain some kind of fitness routine without stepping foot in a gym. Another big adjustment many of us are getting used to, is working from home. If you’re lucky enough to have a job that you can work remotely, then getting yourself set up correctly is imperative.

As I’m sure you’ll find, maintaining high levels of productivity isn’t always easy at home, simply because we’re not in a traditional working environment, we have little ones and pets running riot and we’re trying to keep ourselves out of the snack cupboard. To make the most of your current working situation you must have everything you need to work from home effectively.

Read on for 5 things you shouldn’t work from home without!

Online tools

Despite the fact you’re working from home, a lot is going on right now. So, making your job as simple and as hassle-free as possible is a must. The best way to achieve this is to ensure you have all the online tools you need. If your job involves a lot of article or essay writing, a premium plagiarism tool, as well as grammar and spell checking software prove to be simple yet effective aids that can make working from home much easier and smoother. You’ll also need:

  • A laptop
  • A good internet connection
  • Pens, paper
  • A printer
  • A desk lamp

A working space

It’s always a good idea to keep your work and personal life separate. It will allow you to relax better when your working day is over and it’s much better for your mental health. Try to find a space that you could utilise as an office. A spare room, the end of the kitchen counter etc.

This also applies to children, if you can make a dedicated home work corner for them.

A good chair

Are you sitting comfortably? When you’re sitting in a comfortable chair, you’ll find that your productivity is increased, you’ll find getting into your working mindset much easier and you’re less likely to complain of discomfort and pain. An ergonomic chair is a must, however, if you’re unable to wrangle a good office chair right now, don’t worry. A sturdy chair with some cushions will help keep you comfortable.

Some healthy snacks

Working from home = temptation. And in those moments of boredom or procrastination, most of us head to the kitchen for a snack. To prevent yourself from over-indulging opt for some healthier snacks that you can keep at your desk. Fruit, nuts, seeds, rice cakes and veggie stick are a great choice.

A professional mindset

If you’re going to work from home, you need to be in the right mindset. You’re more likely to get stuff done and feel productive if you embrace your new working situation. So, get showered and dressed, avoid the urge to work in your PJs, stick to the hours you said you would work and avoid the urge to slack off! You’ll only end up working twice as hard later!
