This craft is perfect for preschoolers and young children who love to cut, glue, and get creative. It’s simple enough for beginners but still helps them work on important fine motor skills like cutting shapes, holding scissors correctly, and using a glue stick carefully.

As they cut the pumpkin, stem, and face, they’ll be strengthening hand muscles and improving coordination without even realizing they’re learning.

Kids also love seeing their pumpkin come to life with a funny or scary face. You can make one jack-o-lantern or create a whole family of rocking pumpkins to line up on a shelf, desk, or windowsill. Every child can give their pumpkin its own unique personality, which makes this such a rewarding and confidence-building project.

Supplies You’ll Need for your Rocking Pumpkin

To make your rocking pumpkin, you only need a few basic craft supplies that you probably already have at home. Gather some colored paper in orange, yellow, brown, and black, a glue stick, scissors, and a piece of thin cardboard or a cereal box for the rocking base. That’s it. This craft is made with only simple materials, no fancy products needed, and you’re ready to start crafting your Halloween decoration.

Instructions

  1. Cut a large pumpkin shape from orange paper. Keep it wide and round.
  2. Cut a smaller oval from yellow paper for the inside glow.
  3. Glue the yellow oval in the center of the orange pumpkin.
  4. Cut a small brown stem. You can also use green if you prefer.
  5. Glue it to the top of the pumpkin.
  6. From black paper, cut two triangles for eyes and a curved mouth with teeth.
  7. Glue them onto the yellow oval to make the jack-o-lantern face.
  8. Cut a circle from thin cardboard or a cereal box.
  9. Fold the cardboard circle in half to make a sturdy rocking base.
  10. Run glue along the front of the folded base.
  11. Center the pumpkin on the front of the base and press to stick. The flat edge of the base should align with the bottom of the pumpkin so it rocks evenly.
  12. Let the glue dry, then test the motion by gently tapping one side. Adjust placement if needed while the glue is still tacky.
  13. Optional extras: add a green paper leaf or vine, draw curved lines on the pumpkin for segments, or sprinkle a little glitter on the yellow “glow.”
  14. That’s it. Tap one side and watch your jack-o-lantern rock.
