As toys gradually took over our living room, kitchen, dining room (and virtually every other spot in the house), I knew it was time to turn our home office into the playroom.
I craved a space that was bright, happy, and screamed “Childhood memories will be made here!”
We are on a tight budget, so not every idea on Pinterest was accessible to me. And, that’s okay. Kids don’t know the difference between Restoration Hardware and IKEA. They are gonna have fun regardless.
So, if you’re also counting your pennies and looking for kids furniture in Australia that meets your budget, I hope you are encouraged by our budget-friendly playroom transformation.
Is it Worth Having a Playroom?
I used to ask myself this question as a stay-at-home mom, wondering if dedicating a whole room in our house solely for playtime was truly worth it.
But let me tell you, creating a playroom has been a game-changer for our family.
Not only does it provide a designated space where my daughter can unleash her imagination and have fun, but it also offers numerous benefits that extend beyond just playtime.
From promoting creativity and independence to keeping the rest of your house organized and clutter-free, a playroom becomes a hub of excitement and imagination.
It’s a space where little minds can flourish, friendships can blossom, and memories can be made.
How to Create a Playroom on a Budget
Creating a playroom on a budget is not only possible but also a smart way to maximize the fun while keeping your expenses in check.
First, consider repurposing existing furniture and storage solutions instead of buying new ones.
You’d be surprised how a fresh coat of paint or some creative DIY touches can transform an old bookshelf into a colorful toy organizer.
Next, scout for budget-friendly finds at thrift stores, yard sales, and online marketplaces.
You can stumble upon gently used toys, play equipment, and even decor items at a fraction of the original price.
Lastly, tap into your own creativity by crafting homemade decorations and incorporating personal touches.
From DIY artwork to upcycled play structures, budget-friendly projects add a unique charm to your playroom.
With a little resourcefulness and imagination, you can create a vibrant and inviting playroom without breaking the bank.
Toy Storage
The first thing I focused on when I designed our playroom was a designated spot for toys. I had an 8 cube storage shelf that was collecting dust in our basement and decided it would do the trick.
From both a practical and aesthetic standpoint, I don’t over-clutter the toy shelf. I try to keep it somewhat minimal so that it isn’t overstimulating to my daughter and she can easily pick out what she wants to play with.
On the first row of four, I put out Montessori inspired toys according to her age that capture her attention and inspire creativity, imagination and learning.
Also, if you are doing a toy rotation for your child, this is the perfect way to switch out different toys every so often.
On the second row of four, I added bins to store things like blocks and puzzles. The bins were $12 each making them a bit of a splurge but I felt justified in the fact that I didn’t buy the storage organizer.

Bookshelves
I got our bookshelves from IKEA. They’re nothing special or extravagant but they do the trick and they were the most affordable I could find.
I wanted some that fit my specific space but if you are trying to save money be sure to check Facebook Marketplace to see what you can find there first.
To spice them up I added some picture frames, plants and stuffed animals as decor.
As our children’s books and activities increase we will likely move the adult books elsewhere. I purposely left bits of space on the bookshelf since I know we are close to getting into the reading stage.
Space for Activity and Movement
The rug was the first thing I picked out for the playroom. I knew it would set the tone for the rest of the decor.
I asked for it for Christmas so it was technically free to me. It was about a $70 rug though which in the grand scheme of rugs isn’t horrible.
I went out of my comfort zone and picked a rug with fun colors and polka dots. I was really trying to commit to making the room fun.
If you’re adding a rug to your playroom opt for something soft that is comfortable for babies to crawl on and kids to play on.
Leaving wide open space in the room allows kids to roll around freely and spread out with their toys.
Reading Corner
I love to read and I hope my kids do too so I created a reading corner.
I got the chair on Facebook Marketplace for $45. I looked for something that was a little wider so I could easily sit a toddler with me while I read to them.
I also love that I can sit comfortably while my daughter plays.
I do wonder if the chair might be switched out for a climbing couch or Pikler triangle down the road though.

Accent Wall & Decor
Playroom accent walls are all over Pinterest and I tried to pick and choose my favorite things when designing ours.
I used leftover paint from the nursery to paint the arch and used spice racks from IKEA for the books.

H&M has some adorable playroom decor as well and I bought a few things from there to hang.
Accent walls are one of easiest place to reuse different frames, banners or items you may already have.
Thrift stores are a great place to look for cute things to hang and decorate with.
If you are looking to add a pop of color to the room or control the temperature, blackout curtains are a great option.
Curtains are usually the last thing I think of but every time I add them to a room I feel like the design of the room is elevated and looks complete.
I was going to do colorful curtains but once I got the blue chair on marketplace I felt like I should keep them neutral and the ones I used I already had. Can’t do better than free.
Space to Grow
Finally, as I was putting the playroom together I really wanted to ensure there was space for my baby (and down the road babies) to grow into.
As they grow up their interests change and so do their toys.
I have a small coat closet in the playroom that we haven’t put anything into yet. I am saving the space for toys, books, crafts and activities we don’t yet need or have.
I also left space in the room alongside the walls where we could add a play kitchen or art station down the road.
As you put your playroom together, be sure to think long term what will be the most efficient and make the most sense.
Final Thoughts
Transforming your playroom on a budget is not only achievable but also immensely rewarding.
I had the best time curating the space for my daughter.
It was fun trying to make my vision for the room come to life while keeping the cost low.
A budget playroom makeover not only saves you money but also teaches your little ones the value of resourcefulness and making the most out of what you have.
So, don’t let financial constraints hold you back from creating a magical space for your kids.
With a little ingenuity and a dash of DIY spirit, you can turn an ordinary room into a vibrant and budget-friendly playroom where lifelong memories are made.
