Purple – the Color of Ramadan

In recent years, there has been a real push to use purple as the color of Ramadan, in the same way other celebrations and holidays often have a color associated with them. So in the past few years, purple has become more widely used for Ramadan as a calm, inclusive color that feels modern and peaceful.

Using purple paint on a paper plate gives this twirler a soft, soothing look that works beautifully for Ramadan crafts. It also helps this craft stand out visually, especially when paired with yellow stars and a crescent moon. For kids, painting the plate is a fun, sensory step that lets them explore color before turning the plate into a spiral.

But, if you prefer another color for your Ramadan craft you can go ahead and decorate your paper plate however you like best. Gold and silver are also lovely paper plate twirler ideas for a celebration vibe.

The Symbols Used in our Ramadan Craft – The Crescent Moon and Star

The crescent moon and star are widely recognized symbols of Islam and can be used during Ramadan. These symbols are often seen in decorations, crafts, and art activities for kids.

Including these shapes in this paper plate twirler helps connect the craft to its meaning in a simple, visual way. The star shapes also work perfectly with the spiral design, creating a paper plate star craft that feels balanced and eye-catching as it twirls.

As the spiral paper art hangs and spins, the moon and stars move gently onto each other, making the finished twirler feel calm and almost magical.

Ramadan Paper Plate Twirler Craft

A simple and calming paper plate Ramadan twirler craft for kids, featuring a purple spiral, crescent moon, and stars. This easy paper plate craft spins beautifully when hung up and makes a lovely Ramadan decoration for home or the classroom.

Materials

  • paper plate
  • acrylic paint (or washable kids’ paint)
  • a paintbrush or sponge
  • yellow cardstock or construction paper
  • scissors
  • a glue stick
  • a hole punch (or something to carefully poke a hole)
  • a piece of yarn or string.

Tools

  • Printer if using the template

Instructions

  1. Paint the front of the paper plate a light purple or lavender shade. Try to keep the coat fairly even, but a little texture from the brush strokes looks really pretty on this craft. Set it aside to dry completely.
  2. Cut the plate into a spiral - Once the paint is dry, start at the outer edge of the plate and cut a continuous spiral moving inward, like a snail shell. Keep the spiral strip about 1 to 1.5 inches wide. When you reach the center, stop cutting and leave a small round section in the middle.
  3. Punch a hole in the center - Use a hole punch to make a hole near the center circle where the spiral ends. If you do not have a hole punch, you can carefully poke a hole with a pencil (adult help recommended).
  4. Add the hanging string - Cut a length of yarn or string. Thread it through the hole and tie a secure knot so the twirler hangs from the center. You can double-knot it so it does not slip.
  5. Cut out the moon and stars - From yellow paper, cut one crescent moon and several stars. If you want neat, even shapes, you can sketch them lightly first or use our simple template.
  6. Glue the crescent moon near the top of the spiral, close to where the string comes through. Let part of the moon extend slightly past the spiral edge so it stands out.
  7. Glue the stars along the spiral
Glue the stars along the spiral strip, spacing them out as you go. Press each one down firmly so the corners stick well.
  8. Let it dry, then hang it up - Give the glue a few minutes to set, then hang the twirler somewhere it can catch a little airflow, like near a window, doorway, or fan. As the air moves, the spiral will gently spin and twirl.
