Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games

Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games is the official videogame of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. We took a look at the handheld Nintendo 3DS version, which was released in Europe in April 2016. For those who prefer gaming on the TV, the title will also be released on the Nintendo Wii U in June 2016.

Please note the 3D effects have been turned off in the photos and videos in this post.

The title offers 14 different Olympic sports, each in two modes. The Plus mode offers the same Olympic game with added challenges inspired by Mario & Sonic games. The game offers a single-player campaign, ‘Road to Rio’, where you train up and compete as your Mii character. Alternatively the Quick Play mode allows you to dip in & out and play a single game quickly.

In the Quick Play mode you can choose the character you participate as, either your Mii character, or a character from one of two groups of competitors: Sonic’s gym (featuring Sega’s Sonic characters) and Mario’s gym (featuring Nintendo’s Mario characters).

There is fantastic attention to detail in each of the games and the kids have enjoyed them all. Yet with such a varied selection of games, we wondering how quickly a player could pick up the different controls – and remember them! – when switching between games. Nintendo has foreseen this and the bottom screen always shows the actions linked to each button, and Z commented that he found each of the games’ controls quite straightforward to pick up.

You can either play against the computer (as in the example here) or multiplayer against up to three other players: it’s worth remembering that as long as one player owns a copy of the game, using Download Play four people can play (each having a 3DS or 2DS handheld) without the others having to own the game!

We really enjoyed this game, and I’m sure the boys will enjoy playing it over the Summer while following the real Olympic games! We would recommend this game to any family that enjoys video games and sports.
