Kirby and the Rainbow Paintbrush

Kirby and the Rainbow Paintbrush is the latest Nintendo game (available on Wii U) featuring Kirby. It’s the first time my kids have been introduced to this character, but they took to him really quickly and quickly became one of their favourites.

In Kirby and the Rainbow Paintbrush, Kirby wakes up one day to find all the colour drained out of his land (dreamland) and you have to help him on his mission to stop the evil Claycia and bring the colour back.

Rather than moving Kirby directly, to play the game you draw lines on the Wii U gamepad to direct Kirby, who then rolls along. This makes it feel a bit different to typical platform games.

Kirby and the Rainbow Paintbrush is made in a clay animation style, so Kirby and all of the game play look like they have been modelled from clay. Inspired by this, we made some of our own Kirby clay models (and some of our other favourite Nintendo characters too).

While building we talked about different ways of making animation, and tried our own basic stop motion animation with our Kirby model. At the moment, Z is hoping to go into designing video games when he is older, so it’s really interesting for him to look at different styles and think about different ways that games could be made.
