Do you want to try and push your child to achieve their true academic potential?

If so, then you have come to the right place. This guide will help you to find out everything you need to know, so you can give your child the supportive learning environment they are looking for while also giving them the help they need to feel great about the idea of learning and everything it has to offer.

Read

Teachers overwhelmingly agree that the most important thing that you can do to try and help your child would be for you to read to them at home.

Reading is the key to your child’s success in school, but at the end of the day, it starts out with parents.

Don’t just sit down with a book either. Instead, use this as a time for them to ask questions and talk about the stories you are reading as well.

This is a fantastic way for you to teach your kids about things such as consequences, not to mention that it also helps them to learn about choice.

If you can you need to try and encourage your child to read out loud to you so that they can then expand their vocabulary as well as their public speaking skills.

If you want to get your child to enjoy the biggest benefits of reading, then take the time to talk about historical markers, and discuss stories of character, courage and loyalty.

Use Everyday Occurrences

Did you know that daily routines and situations can be great at helping your child with their practical learning?

If you can, you need to encourage your child to ask “why” as much as possible.

Don’t just give them the answers either. Instead, help to work through the questions with them so you can help them to come to their own conclusion.

If you are not sure how to create a lot of learning opportunities within your daily routine, then don’t be afraid to ask your child’s teacher to see if they can give you some tips.

At the end of the day, teachers are full of ideas, and they are always looking for ways to try and help their kids in the classroom.

If you are able to embody the same methods when at home, then this will help you to give your child even more reinforcement.

Know your Child

Look at the assignment book that your child has and find out what they have been talking about at school, or even have a flick through some of their textbooks so you can find out what they have been writing about.

It may be a good idea for you to have a talk with your child’s teacher to see if they need help in the classroom so you can see your child and how they are doing academically.

If you can do this, then you will soon find that it is easier than ever for you to get the result you want out of the support you are able to give them.

Don’t Look For A’s

You should of course, be doing everything you can to encourage your child to be the best that they can be.

At the same time though, you should be trying to accept the fact that their best might not be the best grade.

That’s fine too. Some children will do their very best and only come out with a B.

There is nothing wrong with this, and it is so important that you understand this.

Every child is different and what success looks like to one child, will not apply to another.

If you can be mindful of this, then this will help you to be a much better parent going forward.

Sort the Basics

If you do not try and do your bit to make sure that your child has their basic needs met, then this will not be doing them any favours.

It is so important that you make sure your child has enough sleep as well as making sure that they have enough nutritious food during the day.

It has been reported that children who eat a very healthy breakfast before school are able to show a better academic performance and they also have a much higher level of cognitive functioning.

If you are not quite sure what you need to be doing to give your child a good breakfast, then ideally you need to look into giving them a lot of fruit, or even brain food such as eggs or avocado.

If you can do this, then you will soon find that it is easier than ever for you to give them the fuel that they need to get through the day.

If your child doesn’t like breakfast, then you can easily try and get them interested by creating fun concoctions.

Don’t be afraid to mix things up a little and even take your child shopping with you so that they can pick out their own fruit and vegetables.

If you can do this, then you will be able to get them much more interested in the food that they eat and sometimes, this is the only change you need to make in order to help them with their development overall.

Talk to your Child’s Teacher

Don’t be afraid to sit down and have a chat with your child’s teacher.

Teachers are always reiterating how important it is to have meetings with parents.

If you can, schedule a time that works for both of you and show up to conferences wherever possible.

If you can show your child’s teacher that you are openly involved in your child’s education, then this will help you out a lot in the long run, and it will also give you the chance to talk to them more often about the progress your child is making.

What Motivates Them?

It is so important that you empower your child to make the right choices.

You don’t want them to do this out of fear that they are going to be punished.

You need to simply make sure that your child knows the value of trying their very best.

If you push your child to study or if you force them to sit and do their homework, then they will always see it as something to resent.

They will also never make the choice to sit down and do their homework for themselves, and this can work against you.

If you can, you need to try and show them the positive aspects of working hard, and you need to show them that you are proud of them too.

If your child is in need of a bit of extra support, then it is a good idea for you to try and support them through online tuition.

Allow them to Fail

Sure, it can be tempting for you to try and take full control over the schoolwork your child is doing but at the end of the day, you have to try and avoid this.

The most successful children are the ones who have learnt how to be organised and responsible through a lot of trial and error.

Sometimes the best lessons in life do not stem from success, but from failure.

If you take over their work, or if you do it for them, then you deny them this level of learning and you also take away the satisfaction that may well come from completing the assignment too.

This is the last thing you want, so it is imperative that you be mindful of this if you can.

Practice Discipline

Teachers tend to agree that disrespect is a huge problem, within the classroom.

Some parents want the school to handle this issue but at the end of the day, it is something that has to be handled at home too.

If you do not make your children act in a certain way when they are at home, then they probably won’t act the way that you want them to when they walk into class.

Ensure that you talk about respect a lot too, whether it is at home, through your marriage or even through your friendships.

If your child can see that you love and respect the people around you, then this will help them and it will also give them the chance to reflect that respect in their own lives.

If you can do this, then you will soon find that it is easier for you to give them the support that they need to become healthy, happy adults.

Praise

You should always aim to be your child’s biggest cheerleader. You need to show them that you are always fighting in their corner and that you will always do whatever it takes to give them the help they need.

If you can do this, you will see a huge improvement in their behaviour and attitude.
