My 9 year old daughter is completely obsessed with Hatsune Miku right now, so this was one of those crafts that instantly had her excited before we’d even printed the template.
It’s simple, colorful, and turns out really cute, making it perfect for a relaxed afternoon craft or a themed activity around Miku Day (we’ll explain this in a minute!)

Who Is Hatsune Miku?
Hatsune Miku is a Japanese virtual pop star created using Vocaloid voice synthesis software. She’s known for her long turquoise twin-tails, futuristic outfits, and a huge global fanbase.
Even though she isn’t a real person, she performs live concerts as a hologram (touring USA this year… my daughter is desperate to go!) and has appeared in games, anime-style art, and endless fan creations.
What I love is how creative the whole Hatsune Miku world is. Kids see her as a character they can draw, craft, dress up, and imagine stories for, which makes projects like this Hatsune Miku papercraft tutorial especially fun.

What Is Miku Day and Why Is It 3/9?
Miku Day is celebrated on March 9th, written as 3/9. The number 39 is closely associated with Hatsune Miku because in Japanese, the numbers three and nine can be read as “mi” and “ku.” Together, that forms “Miku.” Because of this wordplay, the number 39 appears everywhere in Miku’s branding, songs, and fan culture.
So March 9th, or 3/9, is the perfect excuse to make a Hatsune Miku papercraft, listen to some music, or do a themed craft day at home. This project works really well as a Miku Day activity for kids who already love her or are just learning about her.
Materials You’ll Need for your Hatsune Miku Papercraft
You don’t need much for this craft, and you may already have most of it at home. We used a paper plate, acrylic or washable paint for the skin tone and hair, colored paper for details, scissors, glue, and a black marker for the face. You’ll also want our free Hatsune Miku papercraft template printed out.
How to Make the Hatsune Miku Paper Plate Craft
This step by step process follows along with the photos you see above, so kids can easily see how it all comes together.
First, start by painting the paper plate. Paint the top section in a turquoise or teal color for Hatsune Miku’s hair, and the lower center area in a light peach tone for her face. Let this dry fully before moving on, as it makes assembling much easier.
Next, print and cut out the pieces from the hatsune miku papercraft template pdf. This includes the fringe, side hair pieces, eyes, and hair accessories. The printable keeps everything simple and helps younger kids get neat shapes without frustration.
Once everything is cut out, glue the face section onto the center of the plate if you’re layering it, or use the painted plate directly as the face if you prefer fewer pieces. Then attach the fringe so it slightly overlaps the eyes, followed by the long side hair pieces on each side of the plate.
After that, glue on the eyes. Hatsune Miku’s eyes are usually large and expressive, so placing them slightly wide apart gives that classic look. Add the red hair accessories on each side of her head to finish the hairstyle.

Instructions

- Print the Hatsune Miku papercraft template and cut out the hair, fringe, eyes, and red hair accessories.
- Glue the face piece onto the center of the plate if you’re using a separate face cutout, or use the painted plate face area as is.
- Glue the fringe onto the top of the face so it hangs slightly down toward where the eyes will go.
- Glue the long side hair pieces onto the left and right sides of the plate.
- Glue the eyes onto the face, positioning them under the fringe.
- Glue the red hair accessories on each side near the top of the hair.
- Use a black marker to draw a simple smile (and any extra facial details your child wants to add).
