This 3D Paper House Craft involves a free printable template with eight different designs for kids to cut, fold, and assemble into 3D houses. Additionally, it includes a blank template to encourage children to design their own houses. This fun and engaging activity promotes creativity, fine motor skills, and cognitive development.

Here's a guide on exactly how to put these together to make your own paper houses, and paper streets.

Materials

  • Paper or cardstock
  • Scissors
  • Glue or double sided tape
  • Crayons or markers
  • Optional - decorations eg stickers, gems, glitter

Tools

  • Printer

Instructions

  1. Download the PDF file. Yes, it's free! All the eight unique designs are all bundled together for your convenience along with the blank paper house template. Grab this file at the end of this blog post.
  2. Print the templates. Make sure you're using a sturdy type of paper. Cardstock would be ideal, but regular printer paper works too. Then choose which house you want to start with.
  3. Color the houses. If you want to add color, it's best to do this while the house templates are flat, before folding and sticking everything together. You can use crayons, markers or whatever you prefer. Take your time coloring the whole house until you're happy with the design
  4. Cut out the template. Follow the outline and cut out the paper house templates using scissors. Safety first – always supervise younger kids during this step. For some of the templates there is a chimney to be cut out separately
  5. Fold along the edge lines. This is where our 2D paper transforms into a 3D house!
  6. Paste it all together. A good glue stick should do the trick, or you can use PVA glue if you prefer. Double sided tape also works perfectly, and that is what we used here.
  7. And voila! Your 3D paper house is complete.
  8. Move onto the next house. Keep putting together all of the house templates until you have your own street, or even a whole town!
  9. For the blank template, start by sketching your house design. Be creative! This is an exciting opportunity for kids to express their unique visions and ideas. You could also use stickers, glitter, and all kinds of fun decorations.

Why This Craft is Not Just Fun, But Good for Development Too!

The great thing about this 3D paper house craft is that it’s not just an entertaining pastime. It’s also a stimulating and educational activity that promotes fine motor skills and cognitive development in children. Here’s why:

Fine motor skills: The cutting, folding, and pasting involved in creating these 3D paper houses are excellent ways to refine your kids’ fine motor skills. These actions require a certain level of precision and control, which contributes to their hand-eye coordination.

Cognitive Development: Beyond the physical benefits, this activity also promotes creativity, spatial understanding, and problem-solving skills. As children work to transform a flat paper template into a three-dimensional structure, they’re also learning about shapes, symmetry, and space. And when they design their own houses, they’re exercising their imagination and creative thinking.

Fun learning: This fun activity is a fantastic way to introduce kids to the world of architecture and construction in a playful, engaging manner. It’s hands-on learning at its best!
