Let's look at how to dye chickpeas for sensory play
Materials
- 2 16 oz dried chickpeas
- Acrylic paint - red, yellow, black, and white
- 4 sandwich-size ziplock bags
- 1 cup measuring cup
- Wax paper
- Cooking sheet
Instructions
- Gather all the supplies needed. Make sure you have everything on hand before starting the activity.

- Place a piece of wax paper on the cooking sheet and set it aside. This will be used to dry the chickpeas later.
- Separate the chickpeas evenly into the ziplock bags (approx. 1 1/4 C per bag). This will help in getting an even color distribution.

- One bag at a time, add a squirt of paint. Seal the bag, roll, and shake the dried chickpeas to get them coated with paint.
Continue until all 4 baggies of dried chickpeas are painted. This step is great for fine motor skills as kids can help shake and mix the paint.
- Carefully pour each bag of painted chickpeas out into a single layer on the wax paper-covered cooking sheet. Allow the painted dried chickpeas to air dry (about 3-4 hours).

- This waiting time can be used to discuss fire safety and read books about fire trucks and community helpers.
- Enjoy! Once the chickpeas are dry, they are ready for play.
Store in a large resealable ziplock baggie for future use.
Sensory Play Games and Ideas
Now that you have your beautifully dyed chickpeas, here are some fun sensory bin activities to try:
- Fire Rescue Mission: Hide small toy figures (like firefighters or animals) in the chickpeas and let your kids use toy fire trucks to “rescue” them. This game teaches problem-solving and imaginative play.
- Color Sorting: Provide cups or small containers and encourage your children to sort the chickpeas by color. This activity helps with color recognition and fine motor skills.
- Fire Safety Role Play: Use the sensory bin to simulate different fire rescue scenarios. Discuss fire safety tips and the role of firefighters. This is a great way to introduce the concept of community helpers and the importance of fire safety.

While your kids are enjoying their sensory play, it’s a great time to talk about fire safety. Teach them important rules like “stop, drop, and roll,” and how to safely exit a building in case of a fire. Reading books about firefighters and fire trucks can further reinforce these lessons and make the experience even more enriching.
This activity is perfect for toddlers and preschoolers and can be easily set up at home or in the classroom. It’s a great way to fill free time with a productive and educational activity. Plus, the sensory materials used are easily available in any shop, and you probably have most of them in your cart already!
