There’s no right or wrong way to explore various styles of fancy dress. That’s the whole point really, that you go beyond prescriptive fashion trends and create a look that’s both fun and creative.

That being said, there are a lot of different ways of going about finding that perfect party or Halloween look, and it can be difficult to decide which to go with. So, to clarify things a little bit, we thought we’d take a look at both DIY and shop-bought approaches, to see the pros and cons of each.

Shop-bought costumes

First, let’s take a quick look at shop-bought costumes.

Convenient

Not all of us will always have enough time to create our own customised looks, but with a shop-bought costume from somewhere like Fun Place, you can achieve basically the same effect in a highly convenient manner. Simply go in, pick a look that matches what you’re going for, and you’re ready to go.

Reliable

When you go the DIY route, there’s always a chance that what you create won’t look great. If you really want to get things right, then going the shop-bought route can often result in a more reliable end product. Of course, a reliable look might not matter to you as much, but if it does, it’s definitely worth keeping in mind.

More expensive

While shop-bought costumes are more convenient and reliable than shop-bought ones, they are generally a little more expensive. This isn’t because they cost a particularly large amount of money, but rather that DIY options are generally pretty much free, as long as you stick to using materials that you find in your own home.

Now let’s take a look at DIY costumes.

It’s unique

One of the nicest things about making a DIY costume is that it’ll be totally unique. When you buy something from a shop, there’s always a chance that you’ll meet someone where you’re going who’s wearing an identical costume. With DIY ones, on the other hand, you can be relatively certain that you’re the only person with that specific look.

More sustainable

If you’re sustainably minded, then you might want to go with a DIY option. That way, you can recycle materials (old bedsheets, t-shirts) that you’d otherwise end up throwing away, thereby doing your little bit to save the planet.

Time-consuming

Despite DIY costumes being fun and a little more sustainable, they’re definitely more time-consuming than a store-bought option. If you’ve got plenty of free time to dedicate to crafting your perfect look, then that might not be an issue.

If, however, you’re rushing to get your costume together at the very last minute, that might simply not be possible.

There’s no right or wrong choice between these two options, but there are some clear pros and cons to each.

If you’ve got the time, and like crafting things yourself, then why not go the DIY route. If, however, you want a reliable solution that doesn’t take too much effort, then a store-bought costume might be the one for you.
