How to Make the Caterpillar Game

You can create your own version by drawing it yourself on paper or card. Start by drawing a smiling caterpillar face on the left with two antennae, then add 26 circles to make up the caterpillar’s wavy body. Leave the circles blank to begin with. If you’d like a quick shortcut, you can use our free printable template, which saves time and looks neat.

Our template is blank, so you can choose to fill it with uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, or even characters from another alphabet like Arabic or Greek. This makes it so versatile for all kinds of matching games.

To play the letter matching game, you’ll also need letter pieces for kids to match and place inside each circle. We used colorful bottle caps and added dot stickers with the letters written on top, but you can cut out cardboard circles or use foam stickers – anything that fits into the circles will work.

How to Play the Letter Matching Game

Kids pick up a letter piece and look for the matching letter on the caterpillar. Then they place the piece in the correct circle. They keep going until all the letters are matched. This alphabet matching game is easy to understand even for preschoolers, and it’s great for early grade learners too.

To keep the challenge fresh, you can change things up:

  • Write lowercase letters on the caterpillar and use uppercase on the pieces to match.
  • Use numbers instead of letters to make it a math counting game.
  • Try matching letters in a different alphabet if your kids are learning a second language.

This simple letter matching activity is so much more than just fun. Kids build letter recognition skills as they play and learn to match uppercase and lowercase letters. They also practice memory, attention, and visual scanning while playing.

If you use numbers instead, you can even help them with early math skills like counting.

Because the content is so flexible, you can use this game at home, in the classroom, or as a quiet center activity for kids who finish their work early.

Teachers love it for kindergarten and first-grade students, but it can also be adapted for older kids who are learning another alphabet or strengthening their reading foundation.
