Encouraging my kids to read, and having plenty of reading materials at home has always been important to me. This is one of the best things we can do as parents, and the results of this pay off in so many ways.

Whenever other parents ask me for book recommendations, as well as recommending to use the local libraries (I love our local library, it is such a welcoming space and fun place to go), I normally tell them to check out Books2Door since you can browse so many books, and you’re sure to find new book series or types of books that your child will love, and will be suitable for their age and level.

If you’re not sure what books to buy for your child, and love the idea of a surprise then you need to try the monthly book subscription boxes from Books2Door.

All you need to do, is select which age you want – from 0-3, 4-6 or 7-10 and you will receive a surprise box through the post with a selection of age appropriate books along with a couple of activities to add to the fun.

We previously tried the 4-6 box, and now I decided to try the 7-10 box for my 7 year old daughter, who is in year 2.

The boxes are very easy to order on the website, and arrive at your house just a couple of days later. Our age 7-10 book subscription box included 2 fiction books, one non fiction book, and a colour your own bag set along with a word search sheet that my daughter had fun completing before getting started on her books.

With these subscription boxes, you will get books with a broad appeal that would suit either boys or girls.

The non fiction book that we got is all about geology topics like earthquakes and volcanoes, something that N has been interested in for a while but she hasn’t really been in the habit of reading this type of factual book so far so that will be great to introduce her to reading to find out more about topics rather than reading purely for entertainment and stories as she mostly does as the moment.

I have had other books from this DK eyewitness series before with her older brothers and we know that anything from this publisher tends to be great quality.

One of the other books in the subscription box, Head Kid is from an author her older brother T used to read a lot from too. David Baddiel books tend to be lighthearted easy reads with a funny side to them.

The book she picked to read first is the Tombful of Trouble, which is a series we haven’t come across before, based on Agatha Christie and set in the Egyptian pyramids.

This book is good for the younger readers in the 7-10 age range as it does have some pictures, and is a shorter chapter book.

The books in the box are probably not what N would have gone for herself at the library, as she normally tends to go for animal or magic focused books like the Holly Webb series, Star Friends, Isadora Moon and that type of thing. So the interesting thing about these boxes is that it could encourage your child to try something new, and to widen their horizons and choices a little bit in the books that they select.

This could be a great way to find a new favourite, or to discover a new author that they would like to read more from.

She was very excited to receive the box, knowing that it had some surprises for her, so this is another great way to build that excitement and enthusiasm for reading and to help build it into your families routine.

Kids will be motivated to finish reading all of the books in the box that month, knowing that next month they are getting a new set.

The inclusion of creative activities is really nice too, as it makes the whole thing extra fun and N enjoyed doing both the bag colouring and the word search.

Each Books2Door subscription box is 10.99 and you can set it up to come each month, as well as browsing all of the books available on their website. If your child particularly likes one of the books in the box, you may be able to find a full set of those on the Books2Door website for example the Christie and Agatha Detective agency boxset is available for 13.99 with 5 books inside if N decides she wants to finish reading that entire series.

So, check out a Books2Door subscription box and see what surprises your child will find inside!
