If you want to get away with the kids this winter, or during February half term then it’a definitely worth looking at the Canaries. These Spanish islands are only place in Europe with temperatures around 20 degrees in winter, so if you’re looking for some winter sun without a long haul flight then it’s the obvious choice.

The Canary Islands are made up of the 8 main islands, which are (from the largest to smallest) Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro and La Graciosa.

Things To Do With Kids In Tenerife

Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands is also one of the most popular for family holidays. There is so much to do here, so it’s easy to understand why.

Here are a few of the sights and attractions you won’t want to miss.

Siam Park

Siam Park is definitely at the top of the to do list with kids. This water park has a mixture of family water rides, adrenaline thrill rides including the famous Tower of Power, and also opportunities for relaxation with private cabanas.

Loro Park

Loro Park is a zoo with all kinds of wonderful animals from dolphins and orcas to lions, red pandas to penguins.

It has plenty of immersive experiences and a dedicated kids play area called Kinderlandia with trees to walk through, hanging bridges, a snake-shaped slide and a very special rollercoaster, the Orca Train.

Jungle Park

At the Jungle Park, kids can watch crocodile live feeding every day. They can also ride down 800 metres of Bob sled track and take part in the Jungle Raid rope climbing adventure trail.

Whale Watching

The best time to spot migrating whales in Tenerife is between November to February – another reason why the Canaries are perfect for a winter holiday! You can spot dolphins and pilot whales all year round.

Things To Do With Kids In Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura is absolutely beautiful. This island has a more relaxing feel and is a nature paradise.

When visiting with kids, its recommended that Caleta de Fuste is the best part of Fuerteventura to stay in with families.

Oasis Park

This nature park is extensive with many animals to see and interact with, including camels and sea lions, as well as beautiful botanic gardens.

Beaches

There are so many gorgeous beaches to explore with the whole family. Some of the recommended beaches in Fuerteventura are the Costa Calma beach, Emerald beach, Los Lagos beach and Morro Jable beach, in addition to Caleta de Fuste which we already mentioned.

The Fuerteventura beaches have fine white sand and calm waters, making it perfect for kids. You can rent hammocks, sunbeds or do a few water sports with the more adventurous children.

Quad Biking

You can hire quad bikes at many places all over the island, to explore the beautiful volcanic terrain and ride through the hills. This is a brilliant and memorable option for older kids, and a great way to experience the beautiful natural scenery with added adrenaline.

Horse Riding

You can also go for a horse riding session, with options like sunset horse riding where you would be able to get some stunning holiday photos of the kids! You can go for group horse riding lessons, or private lessons, there are all kinds of options available to suit your family.

Things To Do With Kids In Gran Canaria

All of the Canaries are nice and warm during the Winter months, but Gran Canaria and Tenerife are on average the hottest.

Water parks

There are a few different water parks to choose from in Gran Canaria, but Aqualand Maspalomas is one of the most highly recommended.

There are plenty of water slides and rides, and a lazy river for some relaxing moments.

Camel Safari

You can take the kids for a 30 mins camel safari in the dunes of the Mas Palomas nature reserve. This will definitely be a memorable experience for everyone.

As well as water slides and rides, you can also take the kids here for some theme park rides on dry land which they are sure to enjoy.

Things To Do With Kids In Lanzarote

Lanzarote is another of the most popular Canary Islands for holidays with kids.

If you visit on a Tuesday you can take part in Country Night which is a Wild West themed fun night with a cowboy parade, lasso and cabaret show and more.

You can also do dolphin or sea lion interaction here or do a trainer for the day experience.

Piracy Museum

Most kids are interested in pirates, and here you can have an educational trip as you find out the real impact of piracy on the island of Lanzarote with some fascinating exhibitions.

Cactus Gardens

Wander through the cacti with a visit to Lanzarote’s Cactus gardens. Lanzarote is a volcanic island with no rivers, streams or lakes so these dessert plants which require very little water are perfect for this terrain!

You can also go and see the volcanoes of Lanzarote. An easy way is to book a volcano tour, where your guide will pick you up from your hotel and take you around.

Finally, you could enjoy a submarine safari in Lanzarote, where you dive up to 30 metres on a real submarine and get a brilliant view of the underwater world.
