What Is St Dwynwen’s Day?
St Dwynwen’s Day, also known as Dydd Santes Dwynwen, is celebrated on 25th January each year across Wales, not in February like Valentine’s day. Saint Dwynwen was a Welsh patron saint of lovers who lived in the 5th century, and her story has been passed down for generations in Welsh history and tradition. She is believed to have been the daughter of King Brychan Brycheiniog, a powerful figure in century Welsh history.
According to legend, Dwynwen fell in love with a man named Maelon Dafodrill, but their relationship could not continue.
After praying for guidance, she was granted three wishes, including the wish to become the patron saint of true lovers. She devoted her life to helping others with matters of the heart and founded a church on Llanddwyn Island, also known as Ynys Llanddwyn, off the coast of Anglesey. Today, the island sits within a national park and remains closely linked with stories of love, hope, and reflection.

St Dwynwen’s Day pronunciation
St Dwynwen is pronounced roughly as “Doo-IN-wen”, with the emphasis on the first syllable. In Welsh, Dydd Santes Dwynwen is pronounced “Deeth SAN-tess Doo-IN-wen.”
St Dwynwen’s Day Activities and Traditions
Across Wales, St Dwynwen’s Day traditions are quieter and more thoughtful than some other love days. People may exchange cards, small gifts, or kind words rather than grand gestures. Traditional ideas include bakingcookies, sharing handwritten notes, or giving symbolic items like a St Dwynwen’s Day love spoon, which represents care and commitment.
Modern Wales celebrates the day in many different ways, from school activities and crafts to visiting Llanddwyn Island or learning Welsh phrases connected to love.
You might see St Dwynwen’s Day cards, simple classroom displays, or discussions about what love and kindness mean. These traditions make it a wonderful learning moment for children, especially when combined with creative activities.
