Saint Dwynwen was a Welsh patron saint of lovers who lived in the 5th century, and her story has been passed down for generations in Welsh history and tradition. She is believed to have been the daughter of King Brychan Brycheiniog, a powerful figure in century Welsh history.
According to legend, Dwynwen fell in love with a man named Maelon Dafodrill, but their relationship could not continue.
After praying for guidance, she was granted three wishes, including the wish to become the patron saint of true lovers. She devoted her life to helping others with matters of the heart and founded a church on Llanddwyn Island, also known as Ynys Llanddwyn, off the coast of Anglesey. Today, the island sits within a national park and remains closely linked with stories of love, hope, and reflection.

St Dwynwen is pronounced roughly as “Doo-IN-wen”, with the emphasis on the first syllable. In Welsh, Dydd Santes Dwynwen is pronounced “Deeth SAN-tess Doo-IN-wen.”
