It’s a great way to encourage physical activities, household chores, family activities, reading, and quality time before reaching for electronic devices.

Why Do Screen Time Rules Matter?

Technology is part of everyday life, and screens aren’t going away. The goal isn’t to eliminate screen use altogether, but to help children develop a healthy relationship with it.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends balancing recreational screen use with plenty of physical activity, sleep, learning, and face-to-face interaction.

Creating clear screen time limits and screen-free time helps younger children, older kids, and even teenagers understand that screens are one part of the day, not the whole day.

This conversation has become even more relevant recently. Pixar’s Toy Story 5 explores the effects of how children are becoming increasingly attached to digital devices instead of traditional toys, highlighting the importance of finding balance between technology and imaginative play.

At the same time, governments around the world are discussing stronger protections for young people online, with proposals for a social media ban for under-16s reflecting growing concerns about excessive screen time, online safety, and children’s wellbeing.

Having a simple family screen time checklist can make these conversations much easier.

Three Printable Screen Time Rules Versions for Every Family

Every family has different routines, expectations, and priorities. That’s why this printable pack includes three different versions, giving you the flexibility to choose the one that fits your home best.

You might want a ready-to-use poster, a practical checklist, or a completely blank template to create your own screen time rules. You can even swap between them during the school year, summer break, or whenever your family’s routine changes.

Our screen time rules posters and charts do not specify a certain amount of minutes of screen time, or an hour of screen time etc as we understand each family may have their own limits, whether you’re dealing with young children or older children, the amount of screen time you want to allow could vary.

General Screen Time Rules Poster

This colourful poster shares simple reminders about healthy screen use without focusing on specific chores or routines.

It covers general summer screen time rules and ideas like respecting screen time limits, making smart choices online, enjoying family connection, taking breaks from screens, and remembering that life is about balance. It’s perfect for displaying in a playroom, family room, classroom, homeschool space, or even on a bulletin board as a daily reminder for the whole family.

Because the advice is broad and positive, it works well for children of different ages.

Before Screen Time Checklist

If you prefer a more structured approach, this version gives children a clear screen time checklist to complete before earning screen time.

The printable includes practical ideas such as completing a house chore, reading a book, playing outside, finishing homework, connecting with family, and enjoying screen-free activities before using tablets, mobile phones, gaming consoles, or other digital devices.

There’s also space to record your family’s screen time plan, write important reminders, and identify screen-free zones such as the dining room or bedrooms. It helps turn daily responsibilities into part of a consistent daily routine rather than something children are reminded about over and over again.

Blank Family Screen Time Template

Every family is different, so we’ve also included a completely blank version. As well as deciding how much screen time you’re comfortable with, you can set your own choice of tasks to be completed rather than following the typical list, whatever are the important things for your own family.

Simply fill in your own rules using dry erase markers after laminating, or print fresh copies whenever your routine changes. You can add simple tasks, daily chores, educational activities, musical practice, pet care, outdoor activities, reading goals, acts of kindness, or anything else that’s important in your home.

It’s ideal if you’re looking for a summer chore chart, creating a personalised summer routine, or setting different expectations during school breaks and holidays.

Not All Screen Time Is Equal

It’s also worth remembering that not all screen time is created equal. Spending an hour mindlessly scrolling social media or watching endless short videos is very different from using educational apps, creating digital art, coding, video chatting with grandparents, or enjoying a family movie night together. Instead of thinking about screens as simply “good” or “bad,” or about the amount of time spent in front of a screen, try focusing on the quality of the activity.

If your child earns extra screen time, you might choose to make it something more meaningful, like an educational game, board games together on the xbox, using a creative app, making quizzes on gemini ai, or a movie the whole family can enjoy together. Encouraging positive screen use alongside clear limits helps children build healthy habits while still making the most of the technology available to them.

Finding the right amount of screen time looks different for every family, and there isn’t a single perfect formula. What matters most is creating routines that encourage healthy habits, leave plenty of time for physical activity, family connection, creativity, and fun away from screens.

We hope these three printable versions make it easier to create screen time rules that actually work for your home. If you find them helpful, we’d love it if you shared this post with friends, family, or other parents looking for practical ways to encourage a healthier balance between screen time and the real world.
