Drawing together is one of my favorite cozy hobbies with my daughter. On rainy days or autumn afternoons, there’s nothing better than sitting down with some paper, pencils, and a fun idea.

Mushrooms are such a fascinating subject. They can be realistic mushrooms you’d find on the forest floor, or you can create unique mushrooms straight out of fairy tale fantasy worlds. A simple mushroom drawing is a great way to practice drawing skills, and you can make your mushroom art as simple or as detailed as you like.

How to draw a cute mushroom

Learn how to draw a cute mushroom in simple steps! With a rounded cap, white spots, and bright colors, this easy mushroom drawing tutorial is perfect for kids and beginners.

Materials

  • Paper
  • Pencil
  • Eraser
  • Black pen for outlines
  • Colored pencil crayons or markers to color

Instructions

  1. Start with the basic mushroom shape. Draw a rounded cap of the mushroom, using a slightly curved line to form a half-circle shape.
  2. Underneath, add the mushroom stem with vertical lines that connect to the bottom of the mushroom cap. The mushroom’s stem can be short and wide, or tall and thin depending on the style you want – it’s a fun way to explore different shapes and unique styles. You don't want to use a perfectly straight line, give it a bit of a curve.
  3. Once you have the mushroom outline, draw lines for the white spots on top of the big cap. Don’t worry about making them too uniform – organic blobs and different shapes look much more natural, so use some unique shapes not just circles. This is a great way to give your mushroom drawing personality and make it stand out.
  4. Now your basic mushroom drawing looks complete in outline, so it’s time for color. Using color pencils is an easy way to bring it to life. Shade the mushroom’s cap with a solid color of red, using a darker tone at the sides for depth and leaving the middle lighter for a highlight.
  5. The mushroom’s stem can be shaded with a soft yellow or light green, adding slightly darker vertical lines at the edges so it looks rounded.
  6. You can also experiment with different colors if you want unique mushrooms – bright colors like purple or blue work well if you’re going for fantasy mushroom art. If you’d like a classic mushroom drawing, stick with the amanita muscaria look: a round cap, red top, and white spots.

This is such a fun way to practice simple line drawings while learning how to shade and give your mushroom drawing a three-dimensional look.

If you want a kawaii mushroom then add a smiling face.

If you want to mix it up, you can make a whole rainbow of different color mushrooms – pick your favorite color and go for it. This would work for an array of mushrooms in a magical fairy forest.
