The kids are looking forward to seeing the new Minions movie, after seeing the trailer at the cinema, and I have to admit I am pretty keen to see it too. It’s hard to resist those cute little yellow minions! Our favourite sweetcorn brand Green Giant has given in to the Minion take over too and have joined together with Universal Studios to celebrate its release on June 26th.
To help get into the mood we were challenged to come up with a fun minions themed recipe or idea using Green Giant sweetcorn. I hope you like the idea, and that your little minions can have fun with it too – my boys definitely enjoyed using their newly made “minion shooters” to put together this salad, and they ended up eating much more of their salads than they normally do which is definitely a win for me.
So… how do you make a minion shooter? If you’re familiar with pom pom shooters, then this is pretty similar except we’ve replaced pom poms with sweet corn, which allows the kids to shoot sweetcorn directly into their salad, and make it much yummier. (Sweetcorn is their favourite vegetable)
In case pom pom shooters are new to you, then I’ll walk you through it.
You will need:
- 1 paper cup
- 1 balloon
- Scissors
- Tape
To make the optional minion decoration:
- 1 small minion picture (print one out, or cut from a magazine)
- double sided tape
You can make one of these in under 3 minutes (yes, I timed myself – although it will take kids slightly longer)
All you need to do is:
Cut a hole in the bottom of the cup
Tie the end of the balloon, then cut it open at the end (round end) to allow you to stretch it over the cup.
I like to tape it in place to make sure there are no mishaps with the balloon flying off mid-shoot, but that is optional. I’ve seen people use it without taping. We covered our entire cup in yellow tape, and then used double sided tape to apply the minion decoration.
(To see the making in action, watch our short video on YouTube)
Now all you need is a bowl, some salad and some sweetcorn – plus your brand new minion shooter of course.
(Minion googles on the bowl are hand drawn, with duck tape for the band – very quick and easy if you want to decorate a bowl for a Minion themed party)
For the salad, use whichever ingredients you prefer. We used sweet iceberg lettuce, shredded carrot and red cabbage. Minion salad is a flexible recipe – as long as it includes lots of minion-y yellow sweetcorn of course.
We filled our bowl with salad, then the boys used a spoon to load up their minion shooters with sweetcorn and aimed it at the salad bowl.
Be warned the sweetcorn can fly long distances depending how you aim! So be prepared to sweep up afterwards, or maybe do it outside. I don’t mind a bit of mess for the sake of fun.
And there you have your Minion salad – super fun to make, and fun to eat too.
Look out for the Minions promotion on Green Giant sweetcorn in supermarkets now.
And if you make a Minion shooter with your kids, let me know! Have fun 🙂

This is ever so slightly mental but so much fun. Glad I didn’t have to eat the salad though!
