Jonty The Dinosaur Who Could Not Go to Sleep

The boys love to read books with me. As well as traditional paper books, they also enjoy e-books and story apps. This is something I’ve only introduced them to fairly recently, but as they love to use our iPad they always find it exciting!

Jonty The Dinosaur Who Could Not Go to Sleep is a beautifully designed interactive App which is great for young children.

The story tells of the fun Jonty had during the day time – going to the park and making pizza with his mum – but at bedtime, he is not able to fall asleep. These sections were very fun for the children to play with, as they can make Jonty go down the slide, or add the toppings to the pizza!

At first it’s too noisy, then too bright or too cold.

On every page there are features that the child can touch to interact and play along with the story, which adds extra interest especially for Mr R (2) who does not have the longest attention span at the moment!

The language of the story is simple with only one or two sentences on each page, which is also great for Mr R and Mr T (4) as this is the level they are working at for their attention and listening, so it’s not too hard for them to understand.

For Mr Z it is simple enough for him to easily read it, so for him it’s good to build his reading confidence and just to enjoy the story.

The story ends with Jonty finally yawning and falling asleep.

The style of the illustrations is lovely. They are very soft and cute, we really liked them. Mr T and Mr R really like dinosaurs, they don’t get scared of them but still it’s good to have soft and friendly versions! They both love to point at Jonty and tap him when they see him on each page.

The colours are very calming and relaxed too, perfect for a bed time story. There is background music which changes as the story progresses, from upbeat day time music into a soft bedtime lullaby.

You can choose from having the story narrated, to having the child read it themselves. Each word is highlighted as it’s read during the narration which is great to help encourage early readers. While reading themselves, the child can tap to have the word read to them if they get stuck.

Jonty The Dinosaur is a lovely interactive story and definitely one worth adding to your app collection.

  1. I know my kids would love this! We’re planning on buying Ben a tablet for his birthday in the summer so I will have to keep this in mind.
Thanks for linking up this week 🙂
