Moving into a new house is about as stressful as it is exciting. Your new home is a sign of a fresh start, especially if you’ve also moved to a different area.

Once you’ve gotten through the rigmarole of buying or renting a property, you can move your belongings in and properly settle in.

In some cases, this means furnishing your home. You might already have some furniture or other belongings, but for many people, they have to start from scratch.

In this case, it can be even more overwhelming of a move. Here are some tips to help you to make your house into a home.

The Basics

The first thing to focus on is making sure that your home is habitable. Ideally, the property should already be fitted with fixtures and appliances.

The bathroom should be usable from the get-go, and you might already have fitted large kitchen appliances.

If the kitchen doesn’t have a fridge, washing machine, or oven, then these are some of the first investments that you’ll have to make.

You will also need to get a bed to sleep on, then you can focus on other essentials.

Ideally, you want to be able to furnish every room, but if you need to prioritise, then the kitchen should be your first focus.

Make sure that you have the basic cooking equipment, like knives, a chopping board, and some pots and pans. Start small and grow your collection as you settle in.

Soft Furnishings

Once you have the absolute basics, then you can focus on soft furnishings. Plan out where you’re going to put large furniture like sofas, chairs, and tables so that you don’t end up being unable to fit them in.

You should also consider the decor scheme of your home. If you haven’t painted the walls yet, then at least have an idea of what kind of style you want.

This way, you can tie your furniture into it and make sure that everything works well together.

Other soft furnishing ideas include making sure that you have blinds and curtains for your windows.

Made to measure curtains are a great option for non-standard window sizes or doorways.

You should also consider getting rugs, especially for large areas of blank flooring.

A rug can bring a lot of warmth and personality to a room, and make a large room look and feel more cosy.

Artwork and Ornaments

Once you have your home sorted out, you can then have some fun with the finishing touches that really put your stamp on things.

Artwork is a fantastic way to introduce themes and personality to a room, while breaking up blank wall space and drawing the eye. Choose art that you love and you can’t go wrong with it.

You should also look out for ornaments and other decorative items that you can fall in love with.

Sometimes it takes time to build up a collection, but this is one thing that will transform a house into a place you can call home.
