Ramadan, the holy month of fasting, reflection, and community for Muslims around the world, is also a time for creativity and family bonding.
In the spirit of this holy and blessed month, we’re excited to share a simple, eco-friendly craft that children of all ages can enjoy – the Paper Cup Mosque.
This craft not only celebrates the beauty of Islamic architecture but also emphasizes the importance of recycling and creativity.
Whether you’re crafting with family at home or educators looking for a fun classroom activity, this project is perfect for everyone and can be customized to fit any color scheme or design preference.

Materials You’ll Need for your Paper Cup Mosque Craft
- Paper Cup: A simple paper cup serves as the base of our mosque, making this craft an excellent opportunity to recycle.
- Colored Paper (Light and Dark Shades): We’ve chosen purple paper for its regal and vibrant feel, but feel free to pick any color that inspires you or your little ones.
- Glue: For attaching your paper decorations to the cup.
- Scissors: To cut out the shapes needed for your mosque.

Green is also a great choice for Ramadan crafts, being the favorite color of the Prophet Mohammed peace be upon him. Blue is also a popular choice for mosque crafts, like the famous blue mosque in Turkey, or you can’t go wrong with gold and silver, or even Black like the Kaaba.
It’s a good idea to offer multiple colors of paper and let the children pick which ones they would like to use best.

How to make a Cup Mosque Craft
The Paper Cup Mosque craft is a simple, eco-friendly project perfect for Ramadan, encouraging creativity and recycling. It involves transforming a paper cup into a colorful mosque using cut-out paper shapes, suitable for kids of all ages to celebrate Islamic culture and architecture.
Materials
- Paper cup
- Colored paper
- Glue
- Scissors
Instructions
- Cut Your Shapes: Start by cutting out the various shapes from your light and dark purple papers. Kids can use their own creativity but these are the shapes we used: From the lighter shade, cut one long strip, six small strips, one big half-circle, one smaller half-circle, and six small half-circles.
Lay them all out so you can see what you're working with
From the darker shade, cut out a crescent moon, and make sure you have a bigger shape for a dome, and a shape for a door. - Assemble Your Shapes: Begin the assembly by attaching the big half-circle atop your paper cup to serve as the main dome.

- Below it, arrange and glue the six small half-circles to mimic smaller domes. Then, use the remaining half-circle to create a doorway at the bottom of the cup.

- Decorate the Mosque's Body: Wrap the long strip around the center of the paper cup horizontally. Next, evenly space and attach the smaller strips vertically around the paper cup to add more detail and texture to your mosque.

- Add the Finishing Touch: Finally, glue the crescent moon to the top of the main dome. This iconic symbol not only completes your mosque but also beautifully represents the Islamic faith.

While we’ve chosen purple for our mosque, we encourage you and your children to get creative! This craft is a wonderful way for kids to express themselves, learn about Islamic culture, and understand the importance of recycling.
Feel free to explore with different colors, add glitter, stickers, or even use patterned paper to make your mosque unique.

Creating a Paper Cup Mosque during Ramadan is not just a fun activity; it’s a meaningful way to engage with the values of the month.
It encourages kids to think about the significance of mosques in Islam, the importance of recycling, and the joy of creating something with their own hands.
Plus, it’s a fantastic way for children of all ages to develop their fine motor skills, follow instructions, and practice creativity.

This Ramadan, take the time to create something special with your children or students. The Paper Cup Mosque craft is more than just an activity; it’s a celebration of faith, creativity, and environmental responsibility.
