Nothing says summer quite like ice cream, and this colorful cotton ball ice cream craft is a fun way for kids to create their own extra-sweet masterpiece without anything melting!

This easy ice cream craft uses cotton balls as a painting tool, giving the finished ice cream scoop a wonderfully textured, almost tie-dye effect.

Kids can experiment with different colors, mix their own ice cream “flavors,” and see what happens when the paints overlap.

It is a simple process art activity that works well for preschoolers and elementary-aged kids, and you only need a handful of basic craft supplies to get started.

Painting With Cotton Balls

Cotton ball painting is such an easy way to make a familiar painting activity feel completely different. Instead of using a paintbrush, kids dab the paint onto the paper using cotton balls.

The soft, fluffy texture creates a mottled effect, with some areas of the paper covered heavily in paint and others left lighter.

For this ice cream craft, that makes the scoop look bright, colorful and full of different “flavors.”

You can use the suggested pink, red, blue and yellow paints, or let the kids choose their own color combinations. They might make chocolate and mint ice cream, rainbow sherbet, strawberry swirl or a completely imaginary flavor of their own.

Supplies for Your Cotton Ball Ice Cream Craft

For this easy ice cream activity, you will need white and brown construction paper, cotton balls, paint in pink, red, blue and yellow, a marker, scissors and glue.

You will also need the ice cream template to help you create the scoop and cone shapes.

This is a great craft for using up small amounts of paint left over from other projects. You do not need much of each color because the paint is dabbed and layered rather than used to cover the whole paper evenly.

If you prefer with young children you can use washable paints rather than acrylic.

How to Make a Cotton Ball Ice Cream Craft

This craft is quick to put together, but the cotton ball painting gives kids plenty of room to experiment and make each ice cream cone look completely unique.

Materials

  • Cotton balls
  • Paint (Pink, red, blue, and yellow or colors of your choice)
  • Construction paper
  • Marker
  • Scissors
  • Glue

Tools

  • Printer if using template

Instructions

  1. Print and cut out the ice cream template pieces. Trace the ice cream scoop onto white construction paper and the cone onto brown construction paper, then carefully cut out both shapes.
Younger children may need some help with the cutting, while older kids can trace and cut the pieces independently.
  2. Pour small amounts of pink, red, blue and yellow paint onto a plate or paint palette.
Use cotton balls to dab the different colors all over the white ice cream scoop. Kids can use a fresh cotton ball for each color or experiment with mixing the colors together.
There is no need to make the paint neat or even. The overlapping patches and different textures are what make this ice cream craft look so fun
  3. Cut out the ice cream scoop shape
  4. Take the brown paper cone and use a black or dark brown marker to draw diagonal lines across it.
Draw another set of diagonal lines in the opposite direction to create the classic criss-cross waffle cone pattern.
  5. Once the painted ice cream scoop is dry, glue it to the top of the paper cone.
  6. Your colorful cotton ball ice cream craft is now complete!

This craft is perfect for a summer theme, an ice cream unit, a preschool process art activity or simply something colorful to do on a warm afternoon.

You could set out lots of different paint colors and invite each child to invent a new ice cream flavor. Once the crafts are finished, ask them to give their creations names.

You might end up with Rainbow Explosion, Strawberry Sunshine or Blueberry Bubblegum ice cream!

You could even turn all the finished cones into a classroom ice cream shop display or create a colorful summer bulletin board.

More Ways to Make Your Ice Cream Craft Unique

There are so many simple ways to change this activity. Try using pom poms, sponges or scrunched-up pieces of paper instead of cotton balls to see how each painting tool changes the texture.

Kids could also add paper sprinkles, sequins, tiny pieces of tissue paper or a red paper cherry on top. For an extra-large ice cream cone, add two or three painted scoops and stack them high.

The basic idea is simple enough that children can really make it their own, which is always one of the best things about an open-ended art activity.
