What is Hydro-Dipping?

Hydro-dipping, also known as water transfer printing or marbling (in this case nail polish marbling), is a fascinating and creative technique where colorful patterns are transferred onto objects using water and nail polish, or paints.

You can hydrodip all kinds of materials – any material that can stand being submerged in water will work for hydro dipping, including wood, metal, plastic, glass or ceramics.

This DIY method for hydrodipping involves filling a large container with water and adding nail polish to create a marbled effect on the water’s surface.

By carefully dipping the starfish into this mixture, the unique patterns adhere to the three-dimensional surface, creating a stunning, one-of-a-kind design.

The process is simple yet produces professional-looking results, making it a fun and engaging craft for all ages.

  • Large container
  • Water
  • Wax paper
  • Glitter (optional)

  2. Prepare the Water Bath. In a large container, add water and fill it 3⁄4 of the way full. Pour in nail polish colors one at a time, creating a marbled effect on the surface of the water. You may need to add more nail polish after 1-2 starfish get dipped.
  3. Dip the Starfish. Carefully and slowly dip the starfish into the nail polish and water ensuring it gets fully submerged to pick up the pattern.
  4. Slowly remove the starfish from the water, holding it over the container for a few moments to let the excess water drip off.
  5. Place the starfish onto the wax paper to dry. If you want to add a bit of sparkle, sprinkle glitter on the wet surface.
  6. Dry Completely. Allow the starfish to dry completely for 24 hours.
  7. Repeat the Process. Repeat steps 2-5 until all your starfish are beautifully colored. Note that nail polish can stain the container you are using, so choose your container wisely.
