Home security is crucial. However, it becomes even more important when you have a family to look after. Whether you’re out at work, on holiday, or in bed at night, feeling that your home is safe is a priority.

Although burglary rates have fallen in the past 10 years, it’s still wise to stay alert.

There are a few measures you can take to help maintain a safe home.

Security System

A solid home security system offers good protection against intruders. It includes an alarm, motion sensors, and security cameras. Some even have a panic alarm button that connects to the emergency services.

Security systems can be either wired or wireless and often feature backup battery power. Others are part of a smart system that connects to the internet.

Internet Security

Keeping your connection secure is important, especially if you use smart devices. Don’t forget VPN security; it is essential in this case.

VPNs mask your IP address and encrypt your data. Installing a VPN on your router automatically protects every connected device in the house. Updating the software and using strong passwords are vital to securing these systems.

Lighting

Increase the lighting inside and outside your home to deter burglars. Bright exterior lights make it more likely for an intruder to be seen. Motion-detecting lights on exterior walls or gates can also alert you to unwanted visitors.

Keep some lighting on during dark months or in the evening when you’re not home. Smart home systems often allow you to set up ‘away’ modes. They can also mimic movement patterns within the home by switching on lights.

Doors and Windows

Always keep your doors locked. Opportunistic burglars often try to steal car keys from the home. Keep valuable items away from external doors and upgrade your locks and keys to avoid falling victim to this.

Moreover, remember to close all your windows when you’re going out. Some home insurance companies won’t pay out if something happens due to you leaving a window open.

This includes closing the garage windows & side door too. Intruders often look to enter from inconspicuous parts of your home, such as the garage or back garden.

Family Dog

Having a family pet not only brings excitement and adventure, but it can also improve your home’s security.

Basically, a dog can alert residents to the presence of intruders. It also doesn’t need to be a guard dog. Just the sound of barking can be enough to deter would-be burglars.

Outside Space

It’s wise to keep your garden or yard secure with fencing and locked gates. Keep valuables such as expensive tools out of garden sheds. This is especially important if there is no lock.

Also, keep your garage alarmed and remove any items that could help intruders, such as ladders. Finally, get clued up on what opportunists might be looking for. This helps prevent intruders from scoping out your home.
